Be Your Own Hero

Key points from Fred Kofman:!

‣ Life doesn’t just happen to you!

‣ We each have the ability to respond to circumstances according to our values!

‣ The moment you start seeing yourself a part of the problem, you start seeing yourself as part of the solution.!

‣ The Hero mindset is based on four questions

2

1. What challenges am I facing? !2.How might I have contributed(through my action or inaction) to bring this about? !3. What can I do to respond effectively and produce the result I desire. !4. What do I need to do to respond with integrity and express my values?

3

To respond with integrity and to express your values you need to change your mindset.

Why does this keep happening?

“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten.”

Leadership Choices

28

VICTIM - “I didn’t deserve the raise anyway.” This leads to apathy/hopelessness, depression, guilt, despair. !CONFLICT - “You’re a selfish, inconsiderate jerk.” This is the blame game, and the result will likely be anger, resentment, and/or revenge. !RESPONSIBILITY - “I don’t like it, but I have to live with it as I’m sure I would have gotten the raise if I worked harder, or the company did better.” This leads to forgiveness by the employee, but will not change their actions very much. !CONCERN -“The company must not be in great shape. What can I do to help the company here?” This leads to more of an effort by the employee to help. The primary reward is the feeling of satisfaction from helping to make things better. It’s not about the person any longer. !RECONCILIATION -“I see how things are. I’m sure I can create a way to not only help the company, but get that raise or even a better one in the process.” This leads to a brainstorming session for mutual gain.
