Activity
Research case studies to see how enterprises aremaking use of the SONA architecture.
Navigate to www.cisco.com and search on SONACase Studies.
From the SONA homepage, find the link for casestudies.
Select one of the case studies to read about anapplication of the SONA approach.

Self Check
1. Name the 3 layers of the SONA Framework.
2. What are the 3 phases in building an IntelligentInformation Network?
3. What are the main issues with non-hierarchicalnetwork devices?
4. How is the hierarchical model divided?
5. What are the 3 functional areas in the EnterpriseComposite Model?

Summary
The SONA framework guides the evolution of theenterprise network towards IIN.
Cisco Enterprise Architecture with a hierarchicalnetwork model facilitates the deployment of convergednetworks.Nonhierarchical network designs do not scale and donot provide the required security necessary in a moderntopology.
Layer 2 networks do not provide adequate security or hierarchical networking.
Router-based networks provide greater security andhierarchical networking; however, they can introducelatency issues.

Summary
Multilayer switches combine both Layer 2 and Layer 3functionality to support the modern campus networktopology.
Multilayer switches can be used in nonhierarchicalnetworks; however, they will not perform at the optimallevel.
The enterprise composite model identifies the keycomponents and logical design for a modern topology.
Implementation of an ECNM provides a secure, robustnetwork with high availability.
The Campus infrastructure, as part of an ECNM,provides additional security and high availability at alllevels of the campus.
