Creating Sustainability with Polyurethanes (PU)
Unlimited opportunities to savenatural resources and energy
 Approximately 50 million kWh of energyis saved each year in the EU through theuse of polyurethane insulation
 Wall insulation of 1.6 cm of PUR has thesame insulation efficiency as a 1.34 mthick concrete wall
 PUR are an important contributor toenergy conservation in refrigerators.Models designated A++ are 60% moreefficient than refrigerators 15 years ago

Quick Facts in India Cold Chain Market (2009) (sou rce: www.thaindia.com)
- > 30 percent of agricultural produce is lost due to poor cold chain infrastructure- India has >21 mil tonnes of facility and it needs o ver 10 mil tonnes more of such capacities- The waste is good enough to feed 40-50 million peop le (approx. the population of Spain)- Approx. 90% of cold storages use inadequate thermal insulation, which leads to a significant cost in
electricity for cooling. This accounts for 70-80% o f operating costs.

Why Insulation is Critical in Cold Chain
 Thermal insulations play an indispensable role along the whole chain - from food harvest to pre-cool, transportation to storage, to distribution, retail and to household consumption
 Keep products quality, freshness, safety and value, with the most economical and ecological solutions
 The better the insulation or thermal transfer control, the more energy be saved to maintain a constant internal temperature & humidity
 Based on estimation from BMS, application of every 1 kg of PU can save up to 755 kg of CO2 in the average lifetime of a building
 Over a useful lifetime of 50 years, the insulation materials made from rigid PU foam can save more than 70 times compared with those energy consumed during its production, transportation and application process

 Good heat resistance Degradation temperature about 400 °C
(PU: 230-250 °C)
 Can be used at 150 °C continuously
 Up to 200 °C for short time Good flame retardance
 High degradation temperature
 Less release of heat & smoke during burning
 When burnt, PIR foam forms a surface char that helps to insulate the underlying foam from the fire
 PUR couldn’t reach the same flame retardance by adding flame retardant
 Good stability and high strength

 Background & Objective
– Cold chain industry in China is flourishing, yet some of the refrigerated transportation equipments are not meeting standards & requirements. In order to facilitate the market standardization and approach low-carbon emission, BMS, CIMC & Ingersoll Rand collaborate with other partners on joint testing the current refrigerated trucks, cooling equipment and insulation system. The testing outcomes shall be disclosed to government and markets as a reference.
 Key tasks
– Prepare samples (trucks, compartments, cooling equipments) for comparing refrigerant efficiency, panel efficiency, vehicle efficiency (static test)
– Conduct field test (dynamic test) with one logistics company
– Get the lab data and field data for:
• temperature control ability;
• energy consumption;
• food quality, and,
• operation process
– Analyze the data and calculate the efficiency difference
– Co-report and co-publish to promote the optimized refrigerated transportation solution
– Work with national agricultural product logistic center to certify high-standard cold transportation solution
