Bathing in the Past

Long ago people called swimming bathing

With Dublin being by the sea, there is a long history of bathing in areas like Dun

Laoghaire, Blackrock and Killiney.Bathing was very important as many

homes didn’t have running water. People would have to wash themselves in the

sea.

This was a bathing area in Dun Laoghaire around 1900. That’s 111 years ago, and before

even Grandad’s time

People have always loved to bathe.In Ancient Rome thousands of years ago

people enjoyed bathhouses too

In the 1800’s many people had more spare time, and more money, which they

would spend at the seaside. Boating and yachting also became

popular.

Dun Laoghaire was a popular area for

bathing.

Unfortunately many bathing areas were moved to build railways in the 1800’s

Seapoint baths were constructed by 1840, seaward of the railway end of Brighton Vale. They were designed by John Croswaithe.

They were owned by wealthy people. The baths were probably built by the railway

company to make up for the restricted access to the sea.

Seapoint is still a particularly popular spot for bathers.

Sandycove beach!!!Have you ever been to Sandycove

Sandycove has a lovely sandy beach and is a very sheltered spot.

Lifeguards are employed during the summer months and it gets very busy.

This is what Sandycove looked like in the 1970s. That’s 40 years ago!!!The only surviving traces of the old beach buildings are stone steps and a low wall running out to the sea.

Bathing has changed a lot over the years.
