Bass strait is the sea between Victoria and Tasmania.

History

• Victoria was once connected to Australia a long time ago. It is now disconnected and is known as Bass Strait.

Founder:

George Bass was the first European to discover Bass Strait in 1797.

George bass was a navy officer and explorer of Australia

General Information

Bass Strait is around 50m deep and 240km wide at its narrowest point. It has a lot of Islands but the most famous are Kings Island and Flinders Island. Bass Strait Is very rough and lots of ships disappeared during the 19th century.

Transport

• The fastest way to travel over Bass Strait is to fly. But if you wanted a more luxurious ride, take the Spirit Of Tasmania.

Spirit Of Tasmania

• The Spirit Of Tasmania is a luxury cruiser that takes you to Tasmania from Melbourne. It is one of the only boats to take you over the Bass Strait.

• It’s very luxurious and has all you need on board. It has the cinemas, shops and food courts. It can hold a capacity of 1400 passengers, 1000 cars and with a top speed of 30km.

Flinders Island

• Flinders Island: Flinders Island is in Bass Strait. It was discovered by a man called Mathew Flinders. Aboriginals came to Flinders Island to be safe from the white settlement. The population is 897.

King Island

• King Island: King Island is in Bass Strait. King Island was found by a man named Captain Reed. After Reed discovered Flinders Island, British settlement laid the flag on the island.

The population is 1,723 in 2007.
