THE
January
December WINNER IS:
On December 16, 2014, three BARC buses full
of members from the Bakersfield ARC Council
and Clients from Access Now made their way
downtown to the KGET Studios at 2120 L
Street! With toys in hand, the Clients excitedly
distributed their gifts upon the heap of toys in
the studio, to be donated to the 17 Days of
Christmas toy drive! KGET teamed with the
Boys and Girls Club of Kern County and the
Bakersfield Homeless Center to host the toy
drive which collected toys for less fortunate
Atlanta, Sara and Krista Clem of Sweet
Temptations Home Bakery, brought cup-
cakes to the classroom of two of our Access
Now groups to help them celebrate the
new year. Upon meeting one of our groups
at a local Burger King restaurant, Sara made
the generous gesture of buying the group
lunch. Wanting to treat the Clients even
more, Atlanta, Sara and Krista brought the

County and the Bakersfield Homeless Center!
When the call for action went out, BARC
knew that we needed to support our commu-
nity by giving to this worthy cause! “We were
glad to be able to give back and provide help
to the less fortunate kids in the community,”
said ARC Council Chairman Jimmy Layton. “It
made our season brighter and we hope it
brightened the Holidays for all the children
too.”

DEAR REBA
Dear Reba,
I’m looking to shed a few pounds in the New Year. Contrary to
popular belief, my XXL milkshake hasn’t brought all the boys to
the yard. Any advice you can give me would be so helpful.
Sincerely,
Too Much Junk in the Trunk
Dear Junk in the Trunk,
If you want to fit into those skinny jeans, you have to say good-
bye to Ms. Paula Dean! That’s right, diet is the key to transform-
ing your body. You can’t go on eatin’ Mamma’s Chicken Fried
Crawfish and expect miracles to happen. Make sure to eat a well-
balanced diet high in fresh fruits, veggies, lean meats and drink
lots of water! Don’t know what to cook? Don’t fret, healthy reci-
pes can be found is many magazines this time of year and all over
the internet.
You must also find an exercise program that you enjoy. I love to
put on my leg-warmers, a pair of stretch pants, my neon green
head band and get Sweatin’ to the Oldies with Richard Simmons.
Richard is not only fun and full of spunk (key to any exercise
instructor), but he’s also a dreamboat to boot -- that manly man
makes my heart flutter in more ways than one! If he’s not up to
your speed, which would baffle me, you can always try out one
of those new workout crazes. Some people enjoy the new, spicy
Latin-Based Dance Sensation, Zumba, but I prefer to save my
Latin moves for after hours. Follow my advice and you’ll
Jazzercise your way into a new you in 2015!
Valentine Conversation
Heart - Candy Tree!
An inexpensive and fun
craft to do in celebration
of Valentine’s Day is to
make a Conversation
Heart Cone Tree! Big or
small, this craft is easy, in-
expensive and fun for kids
or adults of all ages.
How to do it:
I found small Styrofoam
cones at the Dollar Tree
and found the taller cone
you see here at Michael’s
craft store. Any size cone
will work. The base of the
cone is a simple candle
holder I had in my storage
closet. You can do the
same, not use one at all or
buy one at any dollar
store. Finally, you will
need a low temp glue gun
or a tacky permanent ad-
hesive such as E-6000 and
a bag or two of your fa-
vorite conversation heart
candies. The “Smarties”
brand heart candies have
clearer wording than the
“Brach’s” brand conversa-
tion hearts. Either works,
but I like crisp wording on
my candies for this pro-
ject. Glue each piece onto
your cone and place each piece
of candy close together as seen
here. That’s it! Now you can
make a cute Valentine’s Tree of
your own! Have fun!
