THE PROCESS

THE VACCINE TROUGH A COW

Jenner decided to test this empirical knowledge and had the

idea of inoculating healthy people with cowpox to confer immunity against the dreaded disease.

On May 14th, 1796 he extracted pus from a pustule on the hand of Sarah Nelmes, a milkmaid who had contracted smallpox from his dairy cow, and inoculated a healthy 8 year old boy named James Phipps.

The young boy developed a mild illness between the 7th and the 9th day. A vesicle formed at the points of inoculation, which disappeared without any complication. On July 1st, he inoculated the boy with the dreaded smallpox, but he didn’t fell sick. THE VACCINE HAD BEEN DISCOVERED.
