Over-lapping letters to create a 3D effect.

To Start my book of 26 modified letters, i created a front page using a design with the letter X. I used this letter because it was my favourite modification, i like how i used repetition with the letter to create something interesting along my first page. I also decided to insert another X but this time with it being outlined to overlap eachother. I have kept a white background so its not too bold and i like how i have positioned my characters. The title for this little book is called ‘Laura Light’ where i have faded out the ‘Light’ text to enhance my name. I used the font ‘courier new’ for my text on the front page, i like it because its clear and looks professional with an arty look.

When i started to experiment with the letter forms, i found it hard at first to think about what i could do to them, but after experimenting with many tools i found that just one small edit to a letter could change the entire look of it. To create cuts to my letters i entered a letter to illustrator and clicked on Type > Create Outlines to enlarge the letter making sure i pressed shift to keep it in proportion. I then drew a box over the section of letter i want-ed to cut but made this have no fill so i could see what i was doing. With the selection tool i selected both the letter and the new box and clicked

on window > Pathfinder to create two sections to separate the letter. This is a good way to remove or rotate parts of the letter which i find interesting to use. I particularly like how i have created letters F and G because of the way i have swapped parts about and repeated them, Its almost like a mirror effect which i think looks most effective. To create the ‘M’ i used the circle

shape to cut the M in half to separarate the top half and bottom half, i even added a small green dot to give it some interest and extra detail. I have gone with a grey and green theme throughout the book simply because those colours work well together and adding a touch of colour brightens the whole thing up. I have also selected a few pages to have the green background to make some of the letters stand out or fade against that colour. For some letters i have used just the outline , i quite like this beacuse it enables me to overlap them creating pathways of lines against eachother. When designing the letter ‘T’ it reminded me a bit of a check board in the way i have designed it, placing the letter next to eachother repetive-ly, creates a whole different perpesctive of the letter and what it looks like. As a whole i am happy with how my 26 characters have turned out, they look consistant and

i have tried to keep them in the same similar style. I am pleased with my front page as i feel like it is unique and different, it appears to look quite random but i like the tools and techniques i have used to create it. If i was to do something similar again i would purhaps add more colours into my designs and experiment more with shapes and curves.

Cut in half using circle tool, added green dot for extra detail.

Font, Myriad Pro, edited so the top of the X is tilted.
