MUHLENBERG BASEBALLThe Muhlenberg College baseball program has finished in the top half of the Centennial Conference nine of the past 14 sea-sons, after never having finished higher than ninth place previously.

In 2013, under first-year head coach Tod Gross, the Mules showed that they are a team on the rise, improv-ing by four games in the CC and reaching the 20-win mark for the fourth time in program history.

The 2013 team also:

• Set a school record for doubles

• Produced the program’s all-time hits leader

• Had a first-team all-region selection

For a full list of the team’s accomplishments, please see page 19.

The Mule coaches emphasize pitching and defense and a very aggressive style of offense and baserun-ning as cornerstones of a successful program.

Off the FieldThe members of the Muhlenberg College baseball team are appreciative of their status as collegiate players and make ev-ery effort to give back to the community that supports them.

The last two years, the Mules have participated in a “Polar Bear Plunge” in January, braving the frigid waters of the Le-high River in a benefit for Special Olympics Pennsylvania.

In 2014, Muhlenberg raised more than $2,000, a huge boost to the thousands of athletes who take part in Special Olympics events in the state.

“We worked together and advertised it to our team as a way to help those who don’t get the same opportunity we do,” senior Nick Gazzillo said. “We get to play 40 games a year, compete, have fans watch us and feel something special that every athlete feels. Giving others who don’t have the same physical capabilities as us a chance to do the same feels great.”

The team started what it hopes will be another annual tradi-tion last year when 23 members played “base-bald” - giving up some or all of their hair in support of the Vs. Cancer

Foundation.

Founded by Chase Jones, who was diagnosed with Stage IV brain cancer as a freshman baseball player at the University of North Carolina, the Vs. Cancer Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to sav-ing kids’ lives by empowering athletes and communities to fund lifesaving childhood cancer efforts.

Muhlenberg raised nearly $8,000 last year – more than Division I teams Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee combined. A portion of the money went to the Lehigh Valley Health Network to help children battling cancer in Muhlenberg’s neighborhood.

“I think that’s amazing,” said senior Tyler Latrenta, who gave up his flowing curly locks for the cause. “To be able to do it as a team on the field was really rewarding. It was an honor to be a part of it.”

“‘The small community and small, personal class sizes allow professors [to] ‘become friends, mentors, and role mod-els’ to students. ‘They love what they do, they love students, and they love interacting with students.’ But professors aren’t just friendly faces. ‘They are [also] very knowledgeable in their fields’ and ‘challenge students to achieve more than they thought they were capable of.’ ”

“Muhlenberg has pro-duced Fulbright Fellows and Udall Scholars, but it also ensures that every student excels at his or her own pace. ‘The students and staff at Muhlenberg are what continues to make me reluctant to leave and excited to return,’ a student says. ‘The warm and friendly feeling on campus makes me feel at home.’ ”

Karen Green began her duties as vice president for student affairs/dean of stu-dents at Muhlenberg College on June 15, 2006, following more than four years as dean

of students at Wells College in Aurora, N.Y. At Muhlenberg, Green oversees more than 70 full-time employees and several departments, including athletics and recreation. “Muhlenberg is committed to our scholar-athletes and the athletic programs are an integral part of a liberal arts education,” said Green. “The lessons learned from participa-tion in our programs will sustain our students throughout their lives. The opportunity to be involved in intramural and recreational programs provides balance from the rigors of a challenging academic experience. Students learn negotiation skills, teamwork, time man-agement and to be effective leaders.  “Our coaches are committed to excellence and are partners with students notwithstand-ing their skill level. I will be fully committed to the College’s athletic programs.” Green received her baccalaureate degree from Agnes Scott College in Atlanta in 1986, where the Karen Green Human Relations Award was created in her honor. She went on to earn her master’s of divinity from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in 1997. Green began her administrative career as a res-ident director at Spelman College, later served in the admissions office at Agnes Scott and subsequently became director of orienta-tion, residence life and student activities at her alma mater before leaving Atlanta to accept the position of director of multi-cultural affairs at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y.  She held additional leadership positions in student life at Agnes Scott, Emory and Ham-ilton before assuming the position of dean of students at Wells in September 2001.

Corey Goff began his tenure as director of athletics in July 2012 following more than 10 years as a coach in football and baseball at Muhlenberg. “Muhlenberg’s student ath-letes embody everything that

is right about college athletics,” said Goff upon his appointment. “Having the chance to work alongside our staff supporting those students in their pursuit of excellence through athletics is a dream come true for me.” Goff was named assistant director of athletics in June 2003, and in June 2008 he was promot-ed to associate director. From 2007 to 2012, Goff was head coach of the Muhlenberg baseball team. He led the Mules to a 20-win season and a trip to the Centennial Conference playoffs in 2008 and coached two all-region selections and a CC player of the year. Muhlenberg broke or tied more than 30 indi-vidual and team records in hitting, pitching and fielding categories during his tenure.  Goff was an assistant football coach at Muhlenberg from 2000 to 2005, serving as offensive coordinator the last five of those seasons. The Mules won four straight CC co-championships from 2001 to 2004, made their first three appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament and broke numerous school records.  Goff is a 1995 graduate of Susquehanna Uni-versity, where he was a team captain in baseball and played football. He earned his master’s in educational psychology from the University at Albany in 1997.  Goff and his wife Lauren have two young boys, Collin, 8, and Michael, 5.

Megan Patruno was named assistant director of athletics in 2012. A former assistant executive director of the Centennial Conference, Patruno serves as the athletic department liaison to admis-sions, compliance officer, supervisor of game and event management, golf outing director and student-athlete programming coordinator.

Megan Eddinger was promoted to senior woman administrator in 2010. In addition to her administrative duties, she serves as advi-sor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and head

field hockey coach.

Peyton R. Helm President of the College

Peyton Randolph Helm took office as president of Muhlen-berg College July 1, 2003. He holds the faculty rank of profes-sor of history.

Immediately prior to joining the Muhlenberg community, Helm served as vice president for college relations and professor of classical studies at Colby Col-lege in Waterville, Maine.  Helm began his career in academic administration at the University of Penn-sylvania, where he was named coordinator of College House Programs in 1981. He served as associate director of develop-ment and then director of development for Penn’s School of Arts and Sciences. From 1981-1988 he was also an adjunct assistant professor of ancient history and urban studies at Penn.  In 1988, Helm was named vice presi-dent for development and alumni relations at Colby, where he was promoted to vice president for college relations in 2001. The Council for Advancement and Sup-port of Education (CASE) has awarded Helm its Steuben Apple, given to advance-ment professionals who have been rated as a top speaker at 10 or more national conferences. Helm has delivered addresses and conducted seminars on ethics, stewardship, writing, capital campaigns, market research and volunteer manage-ment at more than 30 conferences across the country and internationally. His writ-ing has been published in CASE Currents and Successful Fund Raising, as well as various scholarly publications in the field of ancient history. Helm earned his bachelor’s degree in archaeology, with magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa distinction, from Yale University. In its 21st year of all-sports competition, the Centennial Conference has taken its place among the nation’s elite small college conferences. On June 4, 1981, Keith Spalding, then-president of Franklin & Marshall College, made the announcement that “eight private colleges found it timely and appropriate to form a round-robin schedule among institutions with

similar attitudes and practices in intercollegiate football.” With that statement, the Centennial

Conference was born. From 1983-92, the eight private col-leges — Dickinson College, Franklin & Marshall College, Gettysburg College, Johns Hopkins University, Muhlenberg College, Swarthmore College, Ursinus College and Western Maryland College

(now McDaniel College) — participated in a football-only conference. Because of

the success in operating the Centennial Football Conference, the league expanded to an all-

sports conference in 1992, with Bryn Mawr College, Haverford College and Washington College joining as charter members. A purpose and mission statement adopted by the presidents stated, “Recognizing that our fundamental purpose is the academic mission of institutions, we agree to establish an all-sports conference in the spirit of rationalizing our competition by controlling travel, schedule and costs. The Conference will be controlled by the presidents of the member institutions.” The Centennial Conference encourages athletic competition among national liberal arts colleges and universities that share similar academic aspirations and a commitment to the importance of the total educational experience of students engaged in sports. Intercollegiate athletics programs are an integral part of the life of the member institutions and flow from their educational objectives. Each institution provides a comprehensive, broad-based athletics program. All varsity sports are treated equitably, and every sport is important. The CC crowns champions in 24 sports and continues to sponsor intercollegiate programs of national promi-nence for women and men. On the average, Centennial members boast of 19 varsity teams, which is well above the national norm. Baseball in the CC is highly competitive. Five CC squads - including Muhlenberg in 2012 - have received votes in the D3baseball.com national poll since its inception in 2010, and a sixth, Gettysburg, received votes in the 2014 Collegiate Baseball preseason poll. The CC baseball champion earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional Tournament each year. Johns Hopkins advanced to the Division III World Series twice in the past six seasons, including a runner-up finish in 2008.

Muhlenberg College sponsors a comprehensive 22-sport inter-collegiate athletics program. The Mules compete in the Centennial Conference in all sports and are members of the National Colle-giate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III. Muhlenberg’s sports program is designed to offer quality com-petitive experi-ences for the serious athlete, with opportuni-ties for outstand-ing teams and individuals to advance to na-tional Division III championships. However, given the breadth of the program, op-portunities also exist for the un-recruited athlete to participate in varsity sports. Muhlenberg has excellent on-campus athletic facilities. Opened in 1982, the Life Sports Center is a build-ing designed for athletics, intramurals and “sports for life” as primary uses. The original solar-heated building, a series of three additions to the Memorial Hall gymnasium, includes the spacious John Deitrich Field House, featuring basketball and tennis courts and a 160-meter running track; the 25-meter Alumni Pool; and the Levering Tyson wing, containing racquetball and squash courts and rooms for sports medicine, weight training, wrestling, dance, instruction and equipment distribution. Memorial Hall, the original facility built in 1954, seats 3,529 and is an excellent facility for viewing indoor sports. The Life Sports Center recently underwent a significant renova-tion that further improved the Mules’ facilities. The three-level, 40,000-square foot addition was built directly west of the Deitrich

Field House and opened in the fall of 2004. The new facility includes additional locker rooms and office space, new recreation and fitness areas and

a new health and counseling center. Outdoors, the Mules have a grass field used by the men’s and women’s soccer teams, constructed in 1997, and a stadium for use by football, field hockey and lacrosse surrounded by an eight-lane, all-weather track, constructed in 1998 and resurfaced with Astro-Turf GameDay Grass™ 3D in 2008.

Through a cooperative arrangement with Lehigh County, the Muhlen-berg College baseball and softball teams play and practice at the Lehigh County Sports Fields complex, located less than two miles from campus. The baseball team has called the complex home since 1997. With dimensions of 315 down the lines, 380 to right center, 365 to left center and 395 to straightaway center, Cedarcreek Field can play drastically different from one day to the next. When the wind is blowing in, pitch-ers gain the upper hand. But on days when the wind blows out, power hitters can swing for the fences. The field has undergone numerous improvements over the past sev-eral years, including moving the backstop back, installing an electronic scoreboard, adding a second batting cage and leveling the playing sur-face. New wind screens were also recently added to the outfield fence.

A three-level, 40,000-square-foot addition to the Life Sports Center opened in August 2004, further improving Muhlenberg College’s ath-letic facilities. The addition, built directly west of the John Deitrich Field House, includes a large weight facility, an expanded cardio-fitness area, a snack bar, new facilities for health service and counseling, training rooms, locker rooms and coaches’ offices. The structure overlooks Scotty Wood Stadium and Varsity Field and is joined to the Life Sports Center by a large indoor corridor on the main level. A new main entrance faces the campus. The project also entailed renovations in the Field House, including installation of a new floor and track, new netting, new lighting and painting.

Tod Gross was named head baseball coach at Muhlenberg College in May 2012, bringing 10 years of experience as a collegiate assistant coach at the

NCAA Division I, II and III levels, including three years at Centennial Conference rival Franklin & Marshall. In his first season as head coach, Gross led the Mules to the fourth 20-win season in program his-tory. Muhlenberg more than doubled its Centennial Conference win total from the previous season, had its lowest team ERA in 10 years and set a school record for doubles in a season. One of Gross’ play-ers was a first-team all-region pick. A 2002 graduate of Shenandoah University, Gross was an assistant at Davidson College for the prior three seasons, serving as hitting coach, working with the infielders and outfielders and coordinating recruiting for a highly selective insti-tution. During his time at Davidson, Gross coached two All-Southern Conference freshman performers and two NCAA Division I Freshman All-Americans along with several Academic All-Conference student-athletes. Before joining the Davidson staff, Gross served as an assistant at Belmont Abbey College for two seasons. In 2009, Belmont Abbey won the South-east regional, advancing to the Division II College World Series and finishing the year ranked in the top five in both major polls. The 2008 team set a school record with 41 wins. Prior to his tenure at Belmont Abbey, Gross spent two seasons on the staff at Guilford College. In his first season, the Quakers set a school record for batting average. Gross began his coaching career at Franklin & Marshall in 2003. In his final season there, 2005, the Diplomats won the Centennial Conference

A 2008 graduate of Mora-vian, Josh Baltz is in his fourth season as an assistant coach at Muhlenberg, working with the pitchers. Last year, he helped

the Mule staff post its lowest ERA in 10 years. A native of nearby Easton, Baltz was a two-time all-conference selection for the Greyhounds before missing his entire senior season due to injury and ranks among the school’s all-time leaders in hits, doubles and walks. Baltz played two summers for the Lehigh Valley Catz of the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League, serving as a team captain his second year.

While on Spring Break in Florida last year, the Mules traveled to nearby Port St. Lucie on their offday to take in an exhibition game between the Mets and Venezuela. The picture at right, in which several Muhlenberg players try to catch the second home run hit by Miguel Cabrera, found its way to the back page of the New York Daily News.

• Muhlenberg reached the 20-win mark for the fourth time in program history.

• After finishing in last place in the Centennial Conference in 2012, the Mules improved four games to second place with a 7-11 league mark, including two wins against teams that qualified for the playoffs.

• The Mules set school records for doubles (84) and assists (436) in a season. Their 104 extra-base hits were four short of the school record.

• Muhlenberg made program history on its Spring Break trip to Florida when it won consecutive games against Martin Luther (16-2), Leba-non Valley (12-2) and Geneva (11-2). It was the first time ever that the Mules scored in double digits and allowed two or fewer runs in three straight games.

• Muhlenberg had fantastic finishes against two quality programs. Trail-ing 6-2 against a Penn State Behrend team that was receiving votes in the D3baseball.com poll and had been invited to a postseason tourna-ment each of the previous five years, the Mules opened the bottom of the ninth with seven consecutive singles before a sacrifice fly capped the 7-6 comeback win ... About a month later, Muhlenberg found itself in a 5-1 hole as it came to bat in the bottom of the ninth against even-tual CC champion Franklin & Marshall. After three hits, a hit batter and two errors, Brett Rosen delivered a pinch-hit walkoff three-run homer to give the Mules a 7-5 win.

• A unanimous All-CC first-team pick, John Muha led the league in hit-ting and set school records for hits in a season (69) and career (194).

• Joseph Vila set a school record for career extra-base hits (60).• Rosen broke the school record for fielding chances without an error in

a season (178).• Vila (15), Nick Kennedy (13) and Muha (10) combined to give

Muhlenberg three players with double figures in doubles for the first time ever.

• Muha and Max Litvak tied the school record for hits in a game (6).• Ryan Rechten tied the school record for career saves (13).• Jimmy Cody led the CC and ranked 19th in Division III in triples per

game.

history/honor roll• The 1928 team (left) went undefeated in 11 games, outscoring foes by nearly seven runs per game, and was ranked third in the East. Three players from that team — shortstop Frank Borrelli, pitcher Frank Spotts and catcher Joe Evans — were good enough to earn tryouts with Connie Mack’s Philadelphia A’s.

• Al Downing, who had a long and successful career in the major leagues, but is best remembered for serving up Hank Aaron’s 715th home run, attended Muhlenberg on a basketball scholarship for one semester in 1959 before leaving to sign a contract with the New York Yankees.

• Mike White, the son of former National League president and New York Yankees broadcaster Bill White, played at Muhlenberg from 1988-91 and ranks fifth in school history with 13 career home runs.

• Sam Beidleman coached more games (562) than any other coach in the school’s athletic history. The Mules won five division championships during his 23 years of coaching, advancing to the

MAC title game in 1971 and 1980.

• One of the most memorable games in the program’s history was on April 23, 1988, when the Mules scored 10 runs — nine of them after two were out — in the bottom of the seventh to defeat archrival Moravian, 14-13.

• In 1997, Muhlenberg and Gettysburg combined to set a Division III record with eight triples in one game — a mark tied the next year in a game between the Mules and Johns Hopkins. Muhlenberg tied a Division III record in 1999 by stealing 16 bases in one game against Beloit.

• The Mules won a school-record 23 games and made a run at their first Centennial Conference champion-ship in 2002. Seeded fourth, they toppled third-seeded Ursinus and second-seeded Franklin & Marshall before dropping two close games to Johns Hopkins in the championship series. Outfielder/pitcher Joshua Carter (left) was named CC co-player of the year after leading the team in batting average (.358), hits (53), doubles (nine), stolen bases (21), wins (eight), ERA (3.43) and strikeouts (76). He also pitched the first no-hitter in program history, a 4-0 gem against Western Maryland.
