A SEMINAR ON

SAFETY AIRBAG AS A PART OF

AUTOMOBILE SAFETY

Submitted byJITENDRA NAGAR341/11

INTRODUCTION Automobile Industry is undergoing a

BIG TRANSFORMATION never seen before.

Today CAR’s are not only used for personal Transport but they are ENCOMPASSED with

1. Entertainment that vies with the fidelity of your HOME THEATRE 2. Seating arrangement more comfortable than your RECLINER

3. SAFETY FEATURES making your car safer than a TANK

•GLOBALLY CAR COMPANIES SPEND NEARLY $36 BILLON ANNUALLY FOR INFLUENCING NEW TECHNOLOGIES INTO THEIR CARS.•Some of the big advancement in Automotive Industry in last 10years have come in a area of SAFETY.

In addition to Telematics based Services like • Digital Satellite Radio•In car E-mail

•GPS systems Recent Advancement in Braking Technology have led to

•Shorter stopping distance•Increased Control in PANIC situation•More control on CURVED turns

AIR BAGS

•What’s the main function of the System?•Material of Airbags?•History

Why we NEED Air Bags?

Supplementary Restraint System for driver and/or passenger safety in case of a crash.

Basic Mechanism: A thin nylon bag in the steering wheel / above glove compartment inflates in the event of an impact and prevents the driver/passenger from hitting the steering wheel/dashboard.

What is Safety air bag?

ACTUAL WORKING

Airbag Before Collision Airbag After Collision

INFLATION UNIT

•How does it INFLATES?

DIFFERENT TYPES OF AIRBAGSDRIVERS SIDE AIRBAG

PASSENGER AIR BAG Curtain Airbags

AIRBAG DEPLOYMENTFrontal crash scenario: Car crashes into an obstacle (wall)

at 20+ mphSensors detect the deceleration and inflator unit activatedDeployment sensitivity: To guard against accidental

inflation on hard braking, sensors detect collisions into a solid barrier at speeds greater than 8-14 mph only as impacts

An electric current is used to heat a filament wire that ignites the NaN3 capsules, producing N2:2NaN3 2Na + 3N210Na + 2KNO3 K2O + 5Na2O+ N2K2O + Na2O SiO2 alkaline glass (safe, un ignitable)130 g of NaN3 produces

67 liters of Na

The airbag then inflates fully at speeds > 320mph within 0.05s of crash. For maximum safety, occupant must have seat

belt on and sit with chest 10” from steering wheelImmediately after full inflation, the airbag deflates through

tiny pores on the surface within 0.3s

Effectiveness

This system has proven its effectiveness

• In frontal crashes reduction in d rivers death reduced by nearly 14%

•Passenger side airbags reducing death by nearly 11%

•NHTSA estimated reduction in risk by nearly 85% with the combination of seat belt and airbags compared than only seatbelt i.e60%
