The Manufacturers• Tons of companies creating lots of things• Only a few major companies tie it all

together• Iris – (Sold by Lowe’s)• Control4• Wink• SmartThings – (Made by Samsung)

The Communication Protocols• X10 – Developed in 1970's most simple protocol; uses power lines in home to communicate.

Its low cost, but can only perform about 16 commands at once• Insteon – Combines wired and wireless communication but can support 65000 different

commands. • ZigBee – a wireless mesh network of devices where each devices acts as a relay to send and

receive information. However, devices from one manufacturer may not be able to communicate to other manufacture; as there is no standard of communication or programming. • Z-Wave is a the new golden standard of smart home communication. Very similar to ZigBee

however the devices are universally compatible with each other regardless of manufacturer. It's not as fast and powerful as ZigBee but is more efficient (thus not needing to be as fast and powerful)• Non Specific:• This includes NFC (close proximity for things to communicate), Bluetooth, and Wireless

are also being used in a lot of home automated devices.
