Auto componentindustry in indiA:An oVerVieW

India has emerged as one ofthe leading global automotivemanufacturing hubs in recentyears. With a turnover of overUSD 39 billion, and exports

worth USD 11 billion to over160 countries, the Indian autocomponent industry today isa preferred sourcing base forglobally competitive products.The auto-components industryaccounts for almost four percent of India’s Gross DomesticProduct (GDP) and employs1.5 million people, directly andas many indirectly. Increasedinvestments in engineering, R&Dand new product development,are expected to further boostIndia’s position as a leadingglobal supplier.

The Indian auto componentindustry boasts of 16 Demingand two Grand DemingAwardees, the highest outsideof Japan. Further, enhancedsourcing from India by originalequipment manufacturers(OEMs) and tier-1s for globalmarkets and increasedlocalisation by OEMs invested inIndia, is also turning the countryinto a preferred engineeringand product designing hub,especially for emerging markets.Factors such as a stablegovernment policy framework,

increased purchasing power,large domestic market, presenceof adequate skilled and semi-skilled manpower and fastimproving infrastructure onlyadd to India’s attractiveness as aglobal hub for manufacturing.

The auto and auto componentsector is a key focus area ofthe Government of India’sflagship ‘Make in India’ program.The Automotive Mission Plan2026, envisages that the autocomponent industry in Indiawill scale-up to USD 200 billionby 2026, while the exports willgrow to USD 70-80 billion. Theaftermarket, in the same breadth,

is expected to grow several foldsfrom the current USD 8 billion toUSD 32 billion by 2026.

A strong and flourishing, butdemanding domestic automarket is helping the Indiancomponent industry strengthenits position in the globalautomotive industry by creatingcost effective products andsolutions. The industry is fastgraduating from being a ‘build-to-print industry’ to one that is‘art-to-part’.
