CAD : COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN

a combination of hardware and software that

enables engineers and architects to design

everything from furniture to airplanes.

first CAD systems served as mere replacements

of drawing boards

mainly used for detailed engineering of 3D models

or 2D drawings of physical components

also used throughout the engineering

process from conceptual design and layout of

products

ADVANTAGES:

Storage and accessibility

3D View

Revisions and modifications

Speed

Accuracy

SCOPE:

Employment in highly customized

Cost-Effective product manufacturing plants

Design of industrial equipment

Design of weapons and missiles

Design of customized prosthetics

Jewelry designing

Automobile Designing

Revamping and remodeling projects

Construction projects

CAD: A BRIEF HISTORY

Beginningof CAD: year 1957, Dr. Patrick J. Hanratty

developed PRONTO, the first commercial

numerical-control programming system

first CAD systems served as mere replacements of

drawing boards

3D wireframe features were developed in the

beginning of the sixties

CAD/CAE/CAM systems are now widely accepted

and used throughout the industry

Further modern Branches of Computer Designing

includes CAD, CAM, CAE’s.

BASIC GEOMETRIC CONCEPTS:

Point: A point in geometry is a location, with no size i.e. no width, no length and no depth.

Line: Endless, Breadthless Length.

Ray: A line which starts at a point with given coordinates, and goes off in a particular direction to infinity, possibly through a second point.

Line Segment: Min. Distance between two points

Circle: the locus of all points equidistant from a central point.

Arc: a segment of a circle

Polygon: A polygon is any Closed, 2-dimensional shape formed with more than 2 straight lines

INTRODUCTION TO AUTOCAD:

AutoCAD is composed of two words: Auto(logo of

company AutoDesk) and CAD(Computer Aided

Design)

A 2D and 3D modeling software widely used in

the manufacturing sector

Launched by the company AutoDesk in Dec. 1982

Came India in 1988

First Version launched: R1, R2 . . . etc.

From 2000, AutoDesk launched the series 2000’s

The latest available version is AutoCAD 2019

AUTOCAD USER INTERFACE:

COORDINATE SYSTEMS:

Absolute Coordinate Systems: refers to a Cartesian System that uses x-axis, y-axis, and sometimes a z-axis to establish a point some distance from a common origin

Relative Coordinate Systems: locations defined by their distance from a reference point.

Polar Coordinate Systems: To specify relative coordinates, precede the coordinate values with an L<A notation. For example, entering @1<45 specifies a point at a distance of 1 unit from the last point specified at an angle of 45 degrees from the X axis.

DRAW TOOLBAR: CONTAINS ALL THE TOOLS USED IN DRAWING/ CREATING

ANY GEOMETRICAL SUBJECT

MODIFY TOOLBAR: USED TO MODIFY/ EDIT ANY GEOMETRICAL SUBJECT
