What is the name of site?

Where is it?

It is located in the Southern part of the Northern Territory, Central Australia

It lies 335 km. south west of the nearest large town, Alice Springs.

When was it established?

The first European to see Uluru was the explorer William Gosse in 1873 who named it Ayers rock.

It was listed as world heritage in 1987.

Who was it established by?

Anango Aboriginal people.

Considered important

Recognised natural and cultural values.

Represents years of work by the Anangu people to assert their role as custodians of their traditional lands.

Why Uluru is important to aboriginal people?

Aboriginal people believe certain sites around Australia are sacred. Uluru is one of them. They believe the bodies of their ancestors hardened into rock. The bodies will be there forever and held in peace and power.

Why Uluru is famous for tourists?• Watch sunset • The rock reflects back the

light at different times of day and seasons, changing its colour into bright gold or orange, brilliant red or yellow, mauve and purple; and black and silver if it has been raining.

It is a huge canyon 270m high

It was began receiving attention when John Muir first visited in 1873

On your way around the rim of the canyon you will pass the tropical pools of the Garden of Eden and the beehive rock formations called

the Lost City.

Alternatively you can take the walk through the canyon gorge looking up to the towering canyon above you. This walk is a slightly more reasonable 1 hour walk.
