in Herdorf, Germany Died April 20, 1964 Father was a carpenter First learned about
photography working in a mine
Uncle gave him money to buy photo equipment
Attended one of Dresden’s Art Academies as a photographer and painter
Becoming Famous Early 1920’s Sander joined “Group Of Progressive Artists” in Cologne Was a German Portrait and Documentary Photographer Face Of Our Time was published in 1929 In 1901 he started working for a Photo Studio in Linz, Australia;
Eventually becoming a partner (1902) and then its sole proprietor (1904)
Left Linz at end of 1909 and set up a new studio in Cologne
Career 1809 took pictures of
young men who wanted mementos
Served in German Army During World War I
Work Includes landscape, nature, architecture, and street photography
1927 traveled to Sardinia to photograph people and landscapes
1933- 1934 published 5 books; German Land, German People Series

Sanders was awarded a gold medal and Cross of Honor at Paris Exposition of 1904
Named an honorary member of the German Photographic Society in 1958
