The Mille Miglia is infinitely more than just an endurance race. It is
also an anthem to the Dolce Vita. The race has an inimitable ability
to convey this Italian-style epicureanism to all those who line up at
the race start. It holds out a powerful promise indeed : a chance to
drive through the world’s most beautiful country at the wheel of the
finest cars in automobile history. One could scarcely imagine a more
exciting opportunity. Architecture, scenery, arts, fashion, along with fine
cuisine, naturally… Italy is quite simply in a league of its own, as is clearly
apparent to competitors speeding along the annual 1600 km route –
and subtly echoed each evening in the elegance and style of the teams
revealed during the stopovers.
Do not be fooled by appearances, however : this is not a stroll in the
park and the daily drives are tough, as racing cars are extremely hard
to tame. They demand constant attention in normal circumstances, so
when it comes to actual competition…
Keeping the pedal to the metal, the way they deserve to be handled,
calls for strong personal engagement. They make you sweat, breathe
deeply… and feel as if you are truly alive. In an age of ever-increasing
digitally sanitised perfection and self-driving cars, taking the controls is
a wonderful feeling.
Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, Chopard Co-Presidentat the wheel of his Ferrari Monza 750,Palazzo Arzaga (May 2011).
“ The race involves plenty of lessons to be taught, including respect for rules, perseverance, precision and sharing. The Mille Miglia basically requires the same qualities as those involved in making our watches.”Karl-Friedrich Scheufele

As you can imagine, this 30th edition will be very special for me. In
1988, enthusiasm for collector’s cars had not reached today’s levels.
Admittedly, a certain number of informed individuals had grasped the
value of these wild yet endearing ‘beasts’. There was already a tussle
for pole position in this field, but not to the degree we are currently
witnessing. Now firmly enthroned, these beauties have attracted a cult
following and become the object of unbelievable attention. Meticulously
prepared, fine-tuned and driven by former champion racing drivers,
they are now delivering incredible performance and are often referred to
as “better than new”. The older they get, the more they are pampered by
their owners. All of which means that this year once again, for the sheer
beauty of sportsmanship, everyone will be dedicated to presenting
the most accomplished possible version of their vehicle. A quest for
absolute perfection uncannily similar to that pursued by our Maison.

Continuity is embedded in the Chopard DNA : we are celebrating 30
years of the Mille Miglia this year. Who can boast such constancy in its
partnership? “The searing memory of the first edition is etched into my
mind. From straight-up pessimists to experienced critics, scepticism
had shown us every facet of its numerous talents. This new idea was
expected to last no more than a few years”, recalls Karl-Friedrich
Scheufele. Except people had neglected to factor in this man and
his iron will. Fired by a passion for racing cars, he realised this was
a race apart right from the very first time he competed in it. While
Tuscany is a magnificent destination in itself, driving through it in the
finest examples of what the automotive industry can offer is simply
sublime. There was no question of stopping there and the Mille Miglia
would thereafter become a fixture on the Chopard calendar. And to
accompany it, what could be more appropriate for the Manufacture
than to assign a dedicated chronograph to the annual event? After all,
a race is above all about timekeeping. While modern-day sports cars
feature built-in electronic chronographs, none could be found aboard
the Porsche 550 Spyder RS. The chronograph was not just there
as wrist candy, but must first and foremost enable drivers to keep a
steady pace. And what better test could there possibly be than four
punishing days spent hurtling along Italy’s secondary road network?
Especially given the nature of racing car suspension systems clearly
favouring performance over comfort…
The teams, the duration, the prestige of the cars : every aspect of the
entire 1600 km race is supremely demanding. The public is keenly
aware of this, as eloquently confirmed by the unrivalled roadside
fervour displayed. The entire route is dotted with unconditional fans, in
keeping with the purest car rally traditions. An annual rendezvous for
some, a pilgrimage for others, it is a source of inspiration and dreams
for all. Older onlookers admire the racing cars of their childhood
whizzing by, while younger bystanders discover an entire segment
of our automotive heritage. A unique transgenerational moment of
sharing that enables everyone to unplug from daily life as well as to
reconnect with each other and with this blast from the past.
The Mille Miglia transcends time. A proven ability to forge its path
through watchmaking-driven automobile history : therein lies the great
strength of this partnership which has consistently kept up the pace.
A race that is truly timeless, like the 30 watch editions that have been
dedicated to it since 1988.

The Mille Miglia is one of the last great adventures possible today.
This is why the Maison Chopard has decided to sponsor this race
and why the Scheufele family still enjoys taking part in it so much
after 30 years. How could it be otherwise, given their fascination
and enthusiasm for classic cars. Chopard Co-President Karl-
Friedrich Scheufele, his father, Karl, and his son, Karl-Fritz, share
their passion in a “one-word answer game” interview.

30 years of friendshipKARL-FRIEDRICH SCHEUFELE AND JACKY ICKX
Karl-Friedrich Scheufele and Jacky Ickx tell us about their friendship and their 30 years of participation in the Mille Miglia.
KARL-FRIEDRICH SCHEUFELE
“In 1989 I took part in the Mille Miglia for the first time with Jacky
Ickx. I thought he’d be driving, but he said he hadn’t planned to get
behind the wheel. I was nervous, as it’s not easy having a legend as
a co-driver, not to mention the fact that part of the route was open
road, so every now and then people would appear from nowhere.
And Jacky was egging me on not to stop, while I protested that there
were people around. He still insisted, saying not to worry because
they’d get out of the way. Then he fell asleep, just before Rome, and
I told myself I must have been doing just fine.”
JACKY ICKX
“I was too young to have raced in the speed editions, but make
no mistake, if I’d been old enough I would have. It was a standing
appointment, like the Targa Florio and Le Mans... Now I take part
in the revival every two years, the perfect pace, as every year
would become a habit and that would take the edge off it. I’m Karl-
Friedrich’s co-driver. Once I’m next to someone who knows how to
drive, I can relax and look at the landscape. I discover places that I
would otherwise never have seen in my life. And Italy has a special
place in my heart. I have a real weakness for it. I love Italians, who
are charming, big-hearted good people. Karl-Friedrich and I are both
passionate about cars and our close friendship has naturally built up
over time. Taking part in this revival is also a way of keeping memories
alive. There are 80 years of motorsports to be safeguarded. An event
such as this turns the spotlight back on the feats of great drivers like
Fangio and Moss, in an era when it represented a round trip of ten
hours. That’s not bad, is it?”
Karl-Friedrich Scheufele with Jacky Ickx, nicknamed “Monsieur Le Mans” because of his six 24H victories, and one of the great racing drivers of our time.

THE 2018 routeTRUE TO TRADITION
The race begins and ends in Brescia. While the loop must invariably
cover 1000 miles, the actual route is different each year, making each
edition truly unique, just like the annually released chronographs.
A real yearly conundrum for the organisers, but a consistently renewed
pleasure for participants. The first stopover of this year’s edition will be
by the sea, at Milano Marittima – a charming port that bears no relation
to the homonymous city and international fashion capital located in
Northern Italy. This high-end seaside resort is a miniature paradise
and a magnet for the country’s young jet-set crowd. Then comes
Rome, a must-have stage dating back to the earliest days of the
race. Subsequently, after crossing through Siena, famed for its wild
twice-yearly horse race, the rally will make a last stop in Parma, a hub
of Italian haute cuisine, to be relished in all its opulent abundance.
On their way back, drivers will pass by the little-known yet highly
desirable town of Bergamo, perched on its fortified hillside. Finally,
they return to Brescia where an ever-enthusiastic public awaits them
along the road and especially at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza.

THE AUTOMOTIVE PALETTETHE HISTORY OF MOTOR-RACING COLOUR
The fact that certain car makes are inextricably associated with certain
colours is not down to manufacturers’ whims or vintage fashion
trends, but instead stems from the history of motor-racing regulations.
In the 1910s, motorsports were above all characterised by their clouds
of dust. What with mud, splashed oil and rubber tyre fragments, drivers
and their cars finished races as dirty as harness racing drivers on their
two-wheeled carts. Given the speed at which they whizzed past, it
was hard for commentators to make out the rankings. To distinguish
drivers’ nationality and the make of their speed machines, each
country was arbitrarily allocated a colour. England was to be green,
Italy red, France blue, Germany grey and Belgium yellow. For France,
the shade of blue adopted by Bugatti and then Matra is the historical
colour of French royalty, while the inimitable British racing green seen
on Bentley, Aston Martin and Jaguar cars is actually derived from the
Irish shamrock. Meanwhile, grey has enjoyed a significant history.
To comply with regulations while lightening the weight of cars, Mercedes
was obliged in the early 1930s to sand down the entire car so as to
reveal the grey colour of the bare underlying metal. The famous silver
arrows were born. They would be imitated by models from Auto Union,
the ancestor of Audi. The fact that Ferraris are red is also down to the
flag, because they were originally yellow! Maserati and Alfa Romeo cars
also competed dressed in red. This colour coding is now a thing of the
past, the 1960s having brought the rise of automobile sponsoring and
car liveries now decked out in the colours of today’s big names.

Mille Miglia Racing ColoursRACING IN STYLE
LEGENDARY COLOURS
National colours for motor-racing were first attributed in the 1910s. In order
to identify the nationality of the competing drivers, one colour was allocated
to each country. Bright red Rosso Corsa for the Italians, British racing green
for the United Kingdom, grey for the German “silver arrows”, yellow for the
Belgians as in their national flag, and finally blue for the French Bugattis and
Talbots.
This provides a valuable explanation behind the historical colours of various
speed machines. The fact that Ferraris are red and Aston Martins are green is
no coincidence, instead stemming from the earliest great races, of which the
Mille Miglia was one of the most popular.
DASHBOARD INSTRUMENT
This collection offering five different colours is an opportunity for unconditional
fans of the Maison to acquire a collector’s model and to match their outfits
with one of these dials… or with the bodywork of their car. An original means
of merging two consuming and often shared passions for fine watchmaking
and historical racing cars.
These Mille Miglia Racing Colours are finely crafted 42 mm chronographs
assembled by the Chopard master-watchmakers in 300-piece limited series
for each dial colour. Their calibre beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and is
COSC-certified, ensuring chronometer-worthy precision throughout the 42
hours of its power reserve. The Mille Miglia Racing Colours chronographs are
inspired by the cars that competed in the Mille Miglia between 1927 and 1940.
The dials display optimal legibility thanks to broad Arabic numerals that are
luminescent at night, as are the hands. The slim cursive fonts, as well as the
counters, are inspired by the typical dashboards of the late 1920s and stand out
by their silver-toned colour. The sweep-seconds hand features a bright red tip
to tick off the precious seconds of the race. The arrow-shaped Mille Miglia logo
appears at 12 o’clock in the heart of the dial. A successful blend of precision,
comfort and elegance, these watches are authentic auxiliary instruments
for drivers hurtling along Italian roads, enabling them to race in true style.
The chronograph functions serving to measure short times are complemented
by the tachymeter scale, which is ideal for measuring average speeds, along
with a date display.
WATER-RESISTANT AND LUMINESCENT
Although less common in Spring when the Mille Miglia takes place, rain can
sometimes play its part in the race, thus making the 50-metre water resistance
of this watch prove particularly useful. In rainy conditions, mean hourly speed
is never quite the same, and some teams end up finishing the race at night.
In such cases, the luminescent hands help competitors keep track of the
tachymeter scale surrounding the hour-markers, without taking their eyes off
the road.
The new Mille Miglia Racing Colours symbolise their owners’ authentic passion
for racing and classic cars : a passion that a true gentleman driver will never
relinquish.
Rosso Corsa, Speed Silver, British Racing Green, Vintage Blue and Speed Yellow were
the colours allocated to the various nations competing in the world of motor-racing.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the partnership between Chopard and Mille Miglia, the
Maison presents a new collection composed of five Mille Miglia Racing Colours watches : a
vibrant re-edition of a historical Chopard collection featuring unique dials and intended for
gentlemen drivers and collectors. They pay tribute to the heyday of motorsports and to an
exclusive race, the Mille Miglia, widely referred to as “la corsa la più bella del mondo”.

Mille Miglia 2018 Race EditionCELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF AUTOMOBILE PASSION AND STYLE
Thirty years of a tireless passion for the “corsa la più bella del mondo”. Who else could
lay claim to such constancy? To celebrate this important landmark, Chopard has created
a special limited, numbered and COSC-certified Mille Miglia 2018 Race Edition. A 44 mm
timepiece forged from a blend of passion, style and precision is taking to the road this year.
Be ready at the starting line however, as only 1,000 of them will emerge from the Chopard
watchmaking workshops in steel, and just 100 in a version combining 18-carat rose gold
and steel.
A STYLISH COSC-CERTIFIED WATCH…
Constancy? Regularity races epitomise this quality.
It is not just peak speeds that are measured, but
also the drivers’ ability to maintain a certain pace.
A watch calibre chronometer-certified by the
COSC like the one powering the Mille Miglia 2018
Race Edition must also maintain a variation in rate
ranging from minus four to plus six seconds per
day. Nothing is left to chance, with a frequency of
28,800 vibrations per hour and a 42-hour power
reserve guaranteeing the regularity of this self-
winding watch.
Rigorous discipline? That too. There is no room
for approximation when it comes to competing in
the Mille Miglia. Careful route reconnaissance, an
accurate road book and meticulous preparation
are all indispensable assets in ensuring the rally
goes smoothly. Created over 30 years ago by
the master-watchmakers of the Manufacture in
accordance with rigorous procedures, the Mille
Miglia collection now welcomes the Mille Miglia
2018 Race Edition, developed in accordance with
the same demanding criteria. The engine-turned
dial, the details of the pushers and crown, as
well as the sapphire crystal case-back bearing
markings celebrating 30 years of passion, all testify
to the superlative degree of finishing lavished on
this chronograph.
… FEATURING PERFECT ERGONOMICS…
Precision? Absolutely. At the wheel of his Porsche
550 Spyder RS, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele does
not negotiate with the road. A sharp turn of the
wheel, sophisticated braking… the finely tuned
speed machine tolerates no compromises. The
same goes for the layout of this 42 mm-diameter
chronograph that must enable the driver to keep
track of time with one eye on the peripheral
tachymeter scale, while the other looks out for
any pitfalls the road may bring. This paragon
of ergonomics highlights the three dashboard-
inspired counters and their graduations displaying
seconds, minutes and hours. More than just an
instrument, the Mille Miglia 2018 Race Edition is an
integral part of the controls for gentlemen drivers.
… AND UNDENIABLE ELEGANCE
A glimpse of Karl-Friedrich Scheufele getting into
his car in front of the “Hotel Vittoria” in Brescia is
enough to grasp the essence of the gentleman
driver. An impeccable polo shirt, a camel-toned
leather jacket with just the right patina, perforated
leather driving gloves and chino trousers are de
rigueur at the wheel to embody the “racing in style”
spirit cherished by Chopard. Comfort is of course
essential to ensuring freedom of movement, yet

never to the detriment of elegance. It is worth
recalling that he drives the favourite car of another
style icon, a certain James Dean, who piloted with
natural charm and ease.
In the evening, the prize-giving ceremony and
various receptions call for a more formal touch. The
perfect combination of a well-cut blazer with a club
tie plus a Mille Miglia 2018 Race Edition in 18-carat
rose gold and steel naturally takes over. One can
safely guess that this father will also be keen to
teach his son the customs and conventions of this
competition : sport and performance, consistently
governed by style and panache.
Therein also lies the strength of this chronograph
that makes the perfect transition between casual
chic by day and elegant evening wear. Water-
resistant to 50 metres, the Mille Miglia 2018 Race
Edition is able to handle pelting rain at the wheel,
then slide neatly under a jacket when it’s time for
cocktails, seamlessly matching the more formal
attire without losing an ounce of its character. The
strap with its short lugs is particularly suitable,
with the perforated red-lined leather on top
evoking vintage racing driver bucket seats and
the legendary Dunlop racing tyre tread below
providing the perfect grip. The analogies continue
with a notched crown resembling a petrol-tank
cap and pushers shaped like engine pistons.
AN EXCLUSIVE TIMEPIECE COMBINING
PERFORMANCE WITH REFINEMENT
Meanwhile, the dashboard-inspired engine-turned
dial single-handedly sums up the watch with its
fusion of performance and vintage spirit. The red
Mille Miglia logo at 12 o’clock, date at 4 o’clock,
as well as the subtle touch of Super-LumiNova®-
painted hands… no detail is coincidental. Some
may be tempted to forget that the Mille Miglia is
above all a distance of 1000 miles : more than
1,600km from Brescia to Rome and back in four
days, often ending after nightfall. The luminescent
coating on the hands thus proves eminently
useful in checking average speed at a glance
even in the dark. Upon arriving back in Brescia
and glimpsing the ramp on the Viale Venezia, the
often worn-out teams are torn between a sense of
relief and a wish to start all over again. The tough,
long and demanding Mille Miglia does not spare
its participants. But, like its “flagship watch”, it
remains all the more endearing.
The exclusive, powerful and sophisticated Mille
Miglia 2018 Race Edition is a true everyday
team-mate, a stylish watch that will doubtless be
adopted by gentlemen drivers of all generations.

Mille Miglia GTS Power Control Grigio SpezialeRACING IN STYLE
CLASSIC INSPIRATION, CONTEMPORARY STYLE
Sophisticated aesthetics and technical excellence meet and mingle in this exclusive
timepiece powered by a Chopard calibre : the 01.08-C movement, chronometer-
certified by the COSC, is entirely developed, produced and assembled in the
Fleurier Ebauches workshops of the Maison Chopard. With its “Rosso Corsa” red,
grey and black detailing, its oversized numerals evoking 1950s car dashboards and
its Cordura fabric strap, the new Mille Miglia GTS Power Control Grigio Speziale
1000-piece limited edition perpetuates Chopard’s beloved “classic racing” spirit.
The intensely grey Mille Miglia GTS Power Control Grigio Speziale is enriching this
collection by revisiting the characteristics of the “classic racing” cars that took
part in the Italian rally between 1940 and 1957. With its red-accented case and
dial, it exudes a powerful allure and a sporty presence suited to all occasions.
This contemporary timepiece comes with a sturdy 43 mm-diameter case in
shotblasted titanium – an extremely light and resistant material – topped by a
bezel with a graduated black aluminium inlay. Its short, streamlined lugs, designed
to mould the curve of the wrist to perfection, ensure optimal comfort and a unique
style, complemented by an integrated strap in Cordura, a high-performance fabric
used for driver race suits. Deftly combining modernity and timeless visual appeal,
it is fitted with a shotblasted stainless steel folding clasp. The screw-in case-
back, ensuring water resistance guaranteed to 100 metres, is secured by eight
PVD-treated black screws and engraved with the inscription “Brescia > Roma >
Brescia”. Ensuring pleasing colour coordination, the tinted crystal, framed by a
bright red gasket, provides fascinating glimpses of the Chopard movement, its
prestigious finishing and its openworked oscillating weight.
To celebrate 30 years of partnership between Chopard and the Mille Miglia, the Geneva-
based Maison presents a new sports edition of the emblematic collection Mille Miglia in
subtle shades of grey : the Mille Miglia GTS Power Control Grigrio Speziale. This powerful
grey-clad model is joining the Mille Miglia GTS collection launched in 2015 and inspired
by the legendary Italian car rally for which Chopard has been serving as official timekeeper
since 1988.
