KETTERING, Ohio – Professional Bowlers
Association Hall of Famer Tom Baker of King, N.C.,
won the PBA50 Dayton Classic presented by Roto
Grip to capture his 12th career PBA50 Tour title and
second of the season.
The 59-year-old Baker defeated fellow Hall of
Famer and top qualifier Norm Duke of Clermont, Fla.,
265-217, in the title match at Capri Lanes to join Duke
as the tour’s only two-time winners this season. The
win also propelled Baker into a three-way tie for sec-
ond on the PBA50 Tour career titles list with Gary
Dickinson and Dale Eagle. John Handegard leads the
list with 14 titles.
“When you bowl a great player like Norm you know
you’re going to have your hands full,” said Baker, who
also owns 10 PBA Tour titles. “I knew I was going to need
a good game. I think we were all a little surprised that the
lanes were playing a little straighter than we thought.
“I was fortunate to start the game with four strikes
and Norm struggled so I was able to build up a little bit
of a cushion which put me in good mindset as the
match went on.”
Baker’s win avenged a loss to Duke in the title match
of the UnitedHealthcare Sun Bowl In The Villages ear-
lier this season which Duke won 256-228.
“I told Norm that now we’re even,” said Baker, who
won his first title of the season in the Northern
California Classic in June. “With two tournaments left
this season hopefully we’ll meet again to bowl for a
title, you never know.”
In the semifinal match, Baker defeated Hall of Famer
Brian Voss of Alpharetta, Ga., 213-203, to advance to
the title match. In the opening stepladder match, Voss
defeated two-time PBA Tour winner Jack Jurek of
Lackawanna, N.Y., 216-167. Jurek and Voss were both
trying for their first PBA50 Tour title.
Heading into the final two tournaments of the sea-
son, Baker moved into a tie with Pete Weber for sec-
ond in the PBA50 Player of the Year points race, 12
points behind Duke who leads.

MIDDLETOWN, Del. – Professional Bowlers
Association Hall of Famer Jason Couch of Clermont,
Fla. defeated Ryan Shafer of Horseheads, N.Y., 234-
190, to win the $15,000 first prize in the PBA Gene
Carter Pro Shop Classic at Mid-County Lanes.
Couch, who was inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame
in 2012, had not competed in a PBA event since last
year. After qualifying 14th, Couch posted a 12-4
match play record to become the tournament leader
entering the stepladder finals. He and Shafer
remained close until the end of the game when Couch
began stringing strikes. Shafer’s chance at the title
went away in the final frame when he lost his footing,
resulting in an open frame.
The win was Couch’s 26th in PBA regional competi-
tion. Couch’s $15,000 prize was the largest payoff in
PBA East Region history, surpassing the $12,500
prize earned last year by Danny Wiseman of
Baltimore. The tournament drew a field of 171 par-
ticipants from 18 states and two Canadian provinces.
Shafer, who qualified in 24th place, earned $7,800 as
the runner-up. B.J. Moore of Apex, N.C. earned

RENO, Nev. - Herman Ferguson
of Los Angeles was one of 12
champions crowned at the 2014
United States Bowling Congress
Senior Championships, and he
earned his title with a clutch per-
formance in his final frames at the
National Bowling Stadium.
Ferguson qualified for the medal
round of the Open Division's 50-54
category on top of the standings
with a 1,441 total for six qualifying
games, and he found himself in
good position to retain the top spot
after firing a 270 in his second
game.
Don Griffin of St. Louis, who
started the three-game medal
round in fourth place, made a late
charge and finished with a 290
game for a 732 series. The effort
forced Ferguson to strike on his
final four deliveries to secure the
victory. He finished with a 687
series and 2,128 total for his nine
games, just 10 pins ahead of
Griffin (2,118).
"I missed a bunch of 10 pins and
put myself in a situation I shouldn't
have been in," said Ferguson, a 51-
year-old right-hander making his
USBC Senior Championships
debut. "Don bowled great, and I
had to refocus and move up a little
on the lane to cut down on the cor-
ner pins. It was a great experience.
I got to meet a lot of good people
and made a lot of friends. That's
what it's all about. This is a great
tournament, and it means a lot to
win. I would be honored if I made
it back next year."
The 2014 Senior Championships
featured two divisions - Open and
Women's - with six age classifica-
tions (50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69,
70-74, 75 and above).
All competitors bowled six qual-
ifying games over two days, after
which the field in each category
was cut to the top six bowlers, who
returned to the NBS on Wednesday
evening for the medal round. All
pinfall carried over, and winners
were determined by their nine-
game totals, which included hand-
icap.
In the 65-69 classification of the
Women's Division, Paulette
Swartz of Grand Forks, N.D.,
turned her fourth Senior
Championships appearance into
her most memorable as she cap-
tured her first title at the event.
The 70-year-old right-hander,
who qualified for the 2014 event
while she was 69 years old, fin-
ished second in Division C in 2008
and entered Wednesday's medal
round at the top of the standings.
The momentum carried into her
final three games, and she finished
with a nine-game scratch total of
1,576. She received 63 pins of
handicap per game and topped the
field with 2,143.
"I'm so excited," Swartz said.
"How do you explain winning first
place at a national tournament? It's
absolutely wonderful. I really felt
good today and worked really
hard."
Other winners in the Open
Division include: Ages 55-59 -
Patrick Foley, Sparks, Nev.; Ages
60-64 - Alex Inglet, Preston,
Idaho; Ages 65-69 - Randall
Morgan, Burkesville, Ky.; Ages
70-74 - Rick Aldous, Winnipeg,
Manitoba, Canada; Ages 75 and
Above - George Vice, Turner, Ore.,
2,358.
Additional titles in the Women's
Division went to: Ages 50-54 -
Amy Neron, New West, British
Columbia, Canada; Ages 55-59 -
Clarita Laje, Milpitas, Calif.; Ages
60-64 - Jennie Nubie, Daly City,
Calif.; Ages 70-74 - Marilyn
Marshall, Deatsville, Ala.; Ages 75
and Above - Jackie McLellan,
Sarnia, Ontario, Canada.
Top prizes ranged from $900-
$1,150. Each winner received a
crystal bowling pin, runners-up
earned commemorative clocks and
third-place finishers received
plaques.
The 2014 Senior Championships
is a national event for bowlers who
qualified through their state's sen-
ior tournament. This year's event
featured more than 400 partici-
pants from across the United States
and Canada vying for a share of a
prize fund of more than $40,000.
Champions Crowned at 2014 USBC Senior ChampionshipsBy Matt Cannizzaro - USBC
ARLINGTON, Texas - With hopes of making following competitive
bowling easier and simpler for a majority of people and mainstream
media, World Bowling has created a new group tasked with exploring
alternative scoring systems.
World Bowling president and CEO Kevin Dornberger has put togeth-
er an Alternate Bowling Scoring System working group that will find a
way to engage non-bowling spectators to help the sport grow.
"The hope is that coming up with a simpler format that is easy for non-
bowling spectators to embrace will lead to a path to inclusion in the
Olympic Games," Dornberger said. "Our current scoring system is very
confusing to people who do not know anything about bowling, and we
need to take a hard look at the possibility of adoption of an alternate
scoring system."
Currently at the World Championships, for example, a traditional
approach to format and scoring is utilized. Bowlers and teams bowl tra-
ditional 10-frame games with six games of qualifying leading to one-
game semifinals and finals.
"Every aspect of the format and scoring of our events is up for review,"
Dornberger said. "We need a scoring system for spectator and TV pres-
entation that cannot lengthen the process, must be understandable by lit-
erate people, and preferably have more wins and losses than once every
twenty minutes, without destroying the credibility of the sport."
To help accomplish the goal of coming up with options, Dornberger
has put together an all-star working group from around the world of
bowling leaders, athletes, coaches, media and commercial bowling
industry executives.
The group includes:
- Micael Hamberg (Sweden), former chairman, Swedish Bowling
Federation, CO-CHAIR
- Brian Graham (United States), Vice President, Brunswick Bowling
Products, CO-CHAIR
- Dr. Mohammed Alathel (Saudi Arabia), Vice President, Saudi
Bowling Federation
- Dom Barrett (England), athlete
- Andrew Frawley (Australia), national team coach
- Jim Goodwin (United States), media
- Onder Gurkan (Turkey), European Tenpin Bowling Federation
Presidium member
- Kirk Von Krueger (United Sates), Deputy Commissioner,
Professional Bowlers Association
- Kelly Kulick (United States), athlete
- Veronica Rajii (Chile), Vice President, Chile Olympic Committee
- Bandar Al Shafi (Qatar), Secretary General, Qatar Bowling
Federation
- Walter Ray Williams Jr. (United States), athlete
Dornberger said the goal for this group is to come up with an initial
recommendation by Dec. 1, 2014, to be presented to the World Bowling
Executive Board. The next WTBA Congress will be held in November
2015, which presents the first opportunity for legislative change.
World Bowling invites suggestions from the public regarding this proj-
ect. Any questions regarding the overall project mission can be directed
to Dornberger by email at President@WorldBowling.org. Any detailed
suggestions or opinions about scoring can be sent directly to committee
co-chair Hamberg at micael.hamberg@me.com.

6 SPORTS REPORTER August 13 - 19, 2014
SEATTLE – Entries will open on Friday, Aug. 15, for the
Professional Bowlers Association’s World Series of
Bowling VI which returns to South Point Bowling Center in
Las Vegas Oct. 24-Nov. 2 with a proven formula, a capaci-
ty field of the world’s most talented bowlers and a few new
wrinkles.
The World Series, which made its debut in suburban
Detroit in 2009, has evolved into an international showcase
for bowlers from around the world, and the sixth edition of
the multi-event championships will carry on the tradition of
drama and excitement with the addition of a new PBA
Challenge television show and a first-look at the new South
Point Bowling Stadium which will host World Series TV
finals.
WSOB VI will include more than 50 hours of live cover-
age on PBA’s online bowling channel, Xtra Frame, as well
as 10 hours of national television coverage on ESPN.
WSOB VI will include its traditional PBA “animal pat-
tern” championships – the Cheetah, Viper, Chameleon and
Scorpion Championships – along with the final major of the
2014 season, the PBA World Championship. Cumulative
qualifying scores for 28 games in the four animal pattern
events will determine the 24 players who will advance to
the PBA World Championship match play finals.
As always, the World Series also will play a key role in
deciding the 2014 PBA Player of the Year and Rookie of the
Year races.
The PBA anticipates another sold-out field of 240 of the
world’s most talented players representing an estimated 20
countries (the 2013 field drew representatives from a record
23 countries). Among the star-studded field of bowlers will
be defending champions Wes Malott (Cheetah), Chris
Barnes (Viper), Ryan Ciminelli (Chameleon), Tom
Smallwood (Scorpion) and Dom Barrett (PBA World
Championship).
A $900 entry fee will include all five PBA Tour events.
Based on a full field, first prize in each of the four animal
pattern events will be $20,000 with 32 places cashing. The
PBA World Championship will offer a $50,000 first prize
with 60 cashing positions. With a total prize fund of more
than $650,000, the World Series will be the richest event in
professional bowling.
New to the World Series program will be the PBA50 Tour
Finals, PBA Regional Finals and PBA Women’s Regional
Finals – each of which will include eight competitors who
will earn berths based on competition points races earlier in
the season. The eight PBA50 Tour players will qualify
based on 2014 competition points. The eight PBA Regional
Finals and eight PBA Women’s Regional Finals players will
include top points qualifiers from the PBA’s East, South,
Central, Midwest, Southwest, West and Northwest Regions
along with players from the new PBA Japan Region.
In each case, the eight players will bowl an eight-game
round-robin match play event on Friday, Oct. 24, with the
top two players advancing to a new PBA Challenge TV
show where they’ll join 2014 Teen Masters boys and girls
champions Michael Coffey of Melbourne, Fla., and Kelly
Skalacki of Coram, N.Y., in a four-match special event for
ESPN.
The PBA International Tour/World Bowling Tour Men’s
and Women’s Finals also will be part of the World Series
lineup. Additional details regarding World Series television
events will be announced soon.
All of the preliminary rounds of the World Series will be
covered live on PBA’s online bowling channel, Xtra Frame.
