FROM THE PASTOR
Is It Unreasonable to Have Faith? A recent column talked about the fundamental difference between humans and animals. From reason we can understand that animals follow their instincts, but humans have such unlimited free choice that we can even choose to go against our instincts. Our free choice, and our ability to reason about our possible choices, mean that we have the great dignity of being persons, able to choose to love others. But are the choices we have before us only determined by our reason? If that were true, probably very few of us would have survived childhood! For example, consider a little girl who sees her
father lighting the wood for a campfire. The curious daughter wants to touch the pretty flames, but her dad tells her “No! That would hurt you!” The daughter does NOT understand the reason that the flames would hurt her, but she trusts her father. She probably could not put this into words, but it is reasonable for her to trust somebody who has always shown her great love. Her trust in her father (her faith in him) goes beyond her reason, but it is a reasonable faith. And her trust in her father pleases him! Of course there is also an unreasonable faith. When you get an email from a complete stranger, offering you millions of dollars if you just send him your bank account information, to trust him would be an unreasonable faith! This is also sometimes called a “blind faith.” There are some things we can know with great certainty from reason alone, just from understanding the meaning of the terms. For example, if we know the meaning of this equation, “1 + 1 = 2,” then we can be extremely certain it is true. That is called “mathematical certainty.” But very little of what we know can be known from reason alone, especially with mathematical certainty. Most of our knowledge, and our choices based on that knowledge, involves trusting others. If we didn’t trust others, we would know very little. A student who said things like, “I won’t believe in a place called Alaska unless I see it for myself,” would not learn much. A student’s trust in his teachers (his faith in them) often goes beyond his reason, but that does not mean it is unreasonable. What of our knowledge of God? There are some good arguments pointing to the existence of God, which we can know by reason alone. For example, there is the argument that a greater thing cannot be caused by a lesser thing. This means that persons (beings of true free choice and reason), could not be “caused” by non-persons. In other words, a non-person could not be the source of their personhood. Many would say that our parents (persons) were the cause of their children (persons), and our grandparents (persons) were the cause of our parents, but it is impossible to go back infinitely in time this way. At some point there must have been an un-caused person who was the cause of other persons (the source of their personhood). This un-caused First Person is God. But our knowledge of God is not limited to what we can know by reason alone. Because of our reasonable trust in others (including other believers, the human authors of the Bible, the martyrs, other saints and the official teachers of the Catholic Church), we can know that God became Man, Jesus Christ, and He has revealed Himself to us in a wonderful way. He has revealed to us the great news we all need to know, the Gospel (Good News) of His perfect love for us. Our faith in the God revealed to us in Jesus goes beyond reason, but it is not unreasonable. And as parents are pleased when their children trust in them, God is certainly pleased by our faith in Him!

PARISH NEWS
Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members
of our community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and
physical suffering may they find consolation in your healing
presence. Show your mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses, make
broken bodies whole and free downcast spirits. May these special
people find lasting health and deliverance, and so join us in thanking
you for all your gifts. We ask this through Lord Jesus who healed

DEL PARROCO
Santo Tomas More
