Introduction 1Purpose
The purpose of this manual is to provide support for "Qualified personal" as described earlier in the text, when installing, maintaining and servicing the ATEX sensors of the LDS 6 laser gas analyzer. This manual describes the preparations, installation, maintenance, service of the ATEX sensors and the barrier units.
How to Use this Manual All instructions in this manual are marked with the symbol to the left. In "Installation Guidelines" the instructions shall be followed in given order. When a problem has been located the chapter "Instructions for Maintenance and Service" provides specific instructions on how to replace components and maintain the system.
Chapter Overview Chapter 2, "Installation Guidelines", gives instructions for the installation of the ATEX sensors and the barrier units. The chapter "Instructions for Maintenance and Service" gives step-by-step instructions for the maintenance and service of the sensors.
Units The measurements in this manual are given in metric units and in American units (in parenthesis).

Installation Guidelines 22.1 Introduction
This chapter provides instructions for the installation of the ATEX sensor system. The chapter begins with some safety information, which is followed by installation instructions. The figure below shows a schematic illustration of the set-up.

2.2 Safety Information
Electrical Safety
WARNING It is essential that you observe the given information and warnings! Certain parts of the gas analyzer LDS 6 carry dangerous voltages. The housing must be closed and grounded before switching on the analyzer. Death, personal injury and/or damage to property may result if this is not observed.
WARNING
Please note that the Alignment kit (A5E00253142) used when aligning the sensors is not covered by the ATEX certificate of the LDS6 analyzer. The kit must never be used in the ATEX zone without permission of the plant manager.
WARNING
No components marked with ATEX can be replaced by field service technicians.
WARNING The LDS6 intrinsic safe cable and other intrinsically non-safe cables are not allowed to be drawn too close together, e.g. in the same cable tray.
The cross duct sensor CD 6Ex meets all regulations specified in the present EU regulations (LVD regulation 73/23/EEC and EMC regulation 89/366/EEC) as well as those of the American and Canadian markets (UL- and CSA regulations). The sensors may be used in explosive as described in ATEX certificate DEMKO 05 ATEX 139648, provided that the ATEX barrier is correctly installed.
Laser Safety All lasers used by LDS 6 are of class 1. The emitted laser light is in most cases invisible (near infrared) and the intensity is so low that the unprotected eye is not damaged. However, if you look directly into the beam with focusing optics (such as binoculars) there is a risk of eye damage. LDS 6 has warning labels at appropriate positions according to SSI FS 1980:2 chapter 5.

Materials in the sensor pair The sensor pair (transmitter and receiver) is built mainly using stainless steel (SIS 2343-27) and Aluminium 231 (max magnesium content 0,5%). The O-rings and gaskets used are made from VITON. The process interface is a wedge window made from borofloat from SHOTT which is clamped in the sensor tube using VITON gaskets. The circuit boards are varnished with humiseal. In the case that the gas purging of the sensor fails the O-rings will be the component that limits the temperature. They can withstand 215 °C.
Pressure Safety In some applications the process can be over pressurized. Normally this is not a situation where the measurements will be adequate. However, from a security aspect, if the over pressure is more than 1100 hPa the high pressure windows version shall be used. These are certified to 16 bars.
WARNING The high pressure glass in the sensors must not be subject to any mechanical impact which might cause damage to the glass (scratch, gash etc.) When cleaning the glass it must be done with a soft cloth.
Make sure all plugs and tube fittings are sealed with the enclosed pipe thread Sealant (Swagelok MS-PTS-6). (Instructions given on the sealant tube must be carefully followed).

Explosion Protection - Ex II 1G D T135°C EEx ia IIC T4 The LDS 6, with a central unit and sensor interconnected with optical fibres, is inherently very safe. Only a limited, low energy part of the electronics is located at the measurement site. The distance between the central unit and the sensors can be several hundred meters. The Ex version is delivered with an approval for use in hazardous environments in which explosive gases are in use. The ATEX certificate a system certificate and is only valid if LDS 6 is installed according to the instructions given in the certificate.

Approval The concept of the Ex approval is that the central unit is not modified and that a special Ex sensor pair (CD 6 Ex) is used in the hazardous zone. In addition to this an explosion protection barrier is added before entry into the hazardous zone. An absolute condition for the approval is that the equipment is set up according to the Siemens Laser Analytics drawing AD_4100-2082_RI_Ex System_LDS6. The protection is as follows: Cross Duct Sensor - {Ex} II 1G D T135° EEx ia IIC T4. Central (Barrier) Unit - {Ex} II (1)G D T135° [EEx ia] IIC T4. ● Equipment Group: Group II - Surface. ● Equipment Category: Category 1G D - Zone 0. Flammable material can be present
continuously, frequently or for long periods, in gas and dust. ● Type of protection: EEx ia. The equipment present in the hazardous area is intrinsically
safe. ● Explosion group: IIC. This corresponds to a gas group containing Acetylene and
Hydrogen. ● Temperature class: T4. The maximum surface temperature on the equipment is 135°C
(275°F) and the ignition temperature of the gas or vapour is between 135°C (275°F) and 200°C (392°F).
● The sensor housing protection is IP 65 and the ambient temperature must be between -30°C (-22°F) and +60°C (140°F).
Liability Following commissioning, the total responsibility lies with the owner.

2.3 The Sensor Installation The installation of the ATEX sensors can be performed by the customer provided the instructions given in the certificate is fully observed.
CAUTION The ATEX certificate is a system certificate and is only valid if LDS 6 is installed according to the instructions given in the certificate.
Note
Do not install the sensors unless the purging media is accessible (for sensors that require purging). Never leave a purged sensor with the purging switched off since the wedge optics are easily damaged.
The transmitter and the receiver sensors require a process flange. These have to be welded and aligned at the site before installation LDS 6. At installation of the cross duct sensor, the fiber end and the photo-detector have to be aligned to the optical axis of the sensor pair. Note that each sensor has an optical axis of its own which is its axis of symmetry. Normally the process flanges are mounted with an angle error. The sensors are however, equipped with a flange pair with a spherical interface. This is used when the sensor pair is aligned to each other. In this way an angle error of up to ±2° on each side can be adjusted for.

Installation of Sensors 1. Check that the flanges are installed properly. 2. Mount the sensors, receiver and transmitter, with gaskets on the flanges and cross-
tighten the bolts. 3. Align the sensors as described in the Instruction manual.
Note The stability of the sensor alignment depends on the stability of the construction to which the customer’s flange is mounted. If the incinerator wall or smoke duct is subject to movements due to, for instance, thermal changes the sensors will need repeated realignment. This can be avoided by mounting the sensor pair on an external, more stable base, such as concrete or steel support.
Installation of Transmitter Sensor Install the cables, hybrid and loop cable, at the transmitter sensor according to the figure below. Cables are fixed in the sensor with gaskets. Always use lubricant on the gaskets before installing, otherwise these will be very difficult to remove later. Multi-mode fiber (SMA connector) and the power supply are just connected straight through to the receiver.
Note Always protect the single-mode fiber (E2000 connector) from dust. Do not remove the plastic vial until the cable is firmly fastened in the sensor.

Installation of Receiver Sensor Install the loop cable in the receiver sensor according to the figure below. Cables are fixed with gaskets. Always use lubricant on the gaskets before installing, otherwise they will be very difficult to remove later. Connect the multi-mode fiber to the sensor-board as shown in the figure below.

Handling of Roxtec gaskets used with CD 6 sensors. The loop and hybrid cables connected to the CD 6 sensors are fitted with Roxtec gaskets. To make sure the sensors are sealed appropriately, the gaskets must be correctly mounted. When the gaskets are delivered together with the cables they are fitted in the protection tubes. When mounting the gaskets in the sensor, please proceed as follows:
● Once the sensors are mounted, remove the cables and gaskets from the protection tubes by unscrewing the fixation screws.

● Lubricate the gaskets with the supplied lubricant. Make sure to cover both inside and outside surfaces.
● Carefully mount the cable and gasket in the sensor.

● Fix the gasket with the fixation screws. Tighten the screws evenly until the gasket seals.

ATEX Barrier When the LDS 6 sensors are used in explosive areas a barrier must be installed between the central unit and the sensor pair. The barrier and the central unit must be installed in a safe environment. Technical specifications for the connections are given on the barrier MTL5021 (blue) and the Surge Protection Device SD32X (yellow), inside the barrier box - se figures below.
Connecting Central Unit to Barrier 1. The central unit and the barrier are connected with a 2 meter long hybrid cable. This
cable consists of two optical fibers and one standard twisted pair for the low voltage power. This cable is connected to the bottom of the barrier box when delivered (when an ATEX version of the LDS 6 is used).
2. Connect the hybrid cable to the central unit using the standard procedure. For illustrations and further instructions on this set-up, see "Appendices".
ATEX Transmitter and Receiver Sensors A hybrid cable is used to connect the transmitter sensor to the barrier.
Connecting Transmitter Sensor to Barrier 1. Cut off the pre mounted phoenix contact at the end of the hybrid at the barrier side. 2. Insert the hybrid cables (one for each channel) through the openings at the top of the
barrier box. Fasten each cable with a gasket. 3. Connect each hybrid cable to the Surge Protection Device SD32X (yellow). - (brown
cable) shall be connected to inlet number 4 and + (green cable) to inlet number 5. 4. Connect the hybrid cable to the transmitter sensor, use the standard procedure described
in "Installation of Transmitter Sensor".

Connecting Receiver to Transmitter Sensor For ATEX versions of the LDS 6 the receiver sensor are premounted with special ATEX electronics and surge protection. The green phoenix contact mounted on the sensor card is already connected with a red wire for + and a black wire for –. Two additional wires should be connected to the phoenix connector. These wires come from the loop cable. 1. Connect the green wire next to the red wire on the phoenix contact. 2. Connect the brown wire next to the black wire on the phoenix contact. 3. Connect the sensor housings, on both the transmitter and the receiver side, to earth
using the premounted 2 meter earth cable (yellow-green). AD_4100-2080_Transmitter_Ex_Std_CD6 and AD_4100-2081_Receiver_Ex_Std_CD6 in Chapter 4 show the transmitter and receiver sensors. All ATEX devices are labelled.
Purging Purging can be divided into purging of optical process interfaces and purging of sensors.
Purging of Optical Process Interface Wedge optics can be purged with instrument air, elevated instrument air, air blower or steam. Always install the purging before the sensors are installed to avoid damage to the optics during the rest of the installation process. The figure below shows the principle set-up for purging. For optimal performance use sensors equipped for the specific purging type, supplied from Siemens Laser Analytics.
Sensor Purging In oxygen applications it might be necessary to purge boxes and lens tubes with an oxygen free gas, such as nitrogen. Any oxygen free gas can be used for this purpose. However, when explosive gases are used the Ex sensor must be used. Purging with oxygen free gas is also necessary when performing water vapor measurements. The sensors for sensor purging supplied by Siemens Laser Analytics include a needle valve and a check valve (see below). Instructions for purging set-up installation are given in the following section.
Purging Set-up Mount the purging connectors according to the following procedure: 1. Remove the four plugs from the wedge tube. 2. Mount the valves and 6 mm tube.

Service Instructions 3The following sections give step-by-step instructions for maintenance and service tasks for the LDS 6 ATEX sensors.
Cleaning the Wedge Windows on the Sensors If the transmission for a channel drops below the level set by the user, the transmission alarm will be activated. This means that the sensors for this channel are in need of service (cleaning of the optical surfaces and aligning the sensors). Before the sensors are removed make sure that: ● If there is steam purging – make sure it is turned off.
CAUTION
It is very important to turn off the steam since overheated steam is invisible and can cause severe burn injuries.
● No hazardous or hot gases can escape from the process. ● Appropriate protection against hot surfaces on and around the sensor is used. Then use the following steps to clean the wedge windows: 1. Remove the quick connect (use the hook spanner from the Sensor Alignment Kit) and
pull the sensor out. 2. Clean the window on the wedge tube. If the optical lens needs cleaning, extra care
should be taken since it is anti-reflection coated and sensitive to scratches. 3. Clean the optical surface with a soft cloth or window cleaner containing ammonia. Soapy
water also works well in many cases. Start at the centre and work with circular movements towards the rim.
4. Remove all particles using pressurized air or flushing water. 5. When the sensor is re-installed make sure that the guide pin fits the hole on the
intermediate tube. Mount the quick connect and tighten it with the hook spanner. This operation is recommended to be followed by checking the sensor alignment, since it may cause the sensors to slightly change position.
Replacing the Sensor Electronics When performing service on the cross duct sensor electronics you must be ESD protected. Use the wrist strap and ground it somewhere close to the sensor. Put the strap around your arm. The sensor electronics are very delicate, so care must be taken when replacing them.

Use screwdriver TORX-10 in the toolkit supplied by Siemens Laser Analytics to change the sensor electronics. 1. Remove the back cover of the sensor by rotating the lid counter-clockwise. 2. Disconnect the two contacts between the sensor card and the loop cable. 3. Remove the four screws holding the card. 4. Carefully remove the card. 5. Replace the sensor electronics (detector module and/or sensor card). 6. Mount the four screws holding the card. 7. Connect the two contacts. 8. Replace the back cover by rotating it clockwise.
WARNING
The sensor cards can under no circumstances be modified or partially updated. Performing any actions except for the ones given in this manual will violate the ATEX certification and may cause death or substantial damage. Siemens will not be liable for any damages should these instructions not be followed.

ESD guidelines BB.1 ESD (ElectroStatic Discharge)
ESD is the rapid, spontaneous transfer of electrostatic charge induced by a high electrostatic field. Electrostatic damage to electronic devices can occur at any point from manufacture to field service. Damage results from handling the devices in uncontrolled surroundings or when poor ESD control practices are used. Generally damage is classified as either a catastrophic failure or a latent defect. The symbol to the left indicates an ESD protected area, where all workspaces are ESD protected and all personnel must wear wrist straps. This symbol will be used in this chapter to indicate that a service task requires ESD protection. A catastrophic failure means that exposure to an ESD event has caused an electronic device to stop functioning. Such failures usually can be detected when the device is tested before shipment. A latent defect, on the other hand, is more difficult to identify. It means that the device has only been partially degraded from exposure to an ESD event. Latent defects are extremely difficult to prove or detect using current technology, especially after the device is assembled into a finished product.
Note Usually, the charge flows through a spark between two objects at different electrostatic potentials as they approach one another.
It is of utmost importance that ESD protective procedures are used during service in the field. The components used in SITRANS SL have all been protected from ESD through the whole production chain.
Ground Everything Effective ESD grounds are of critical importance in any operation, and ESD grounding should be clearly defined and regularly evaluated. According to the ESD Association Standard ANSI EOS/ESD all conductors in the environment, including personnel, must be bonded or electrically connected and attached to a known ground, bringing all ESD protective materials and personnel to the same electrical potential. This potential can be above a "zero" voltage ground reference as long as all items in the system are at the same potential. It is important to note that non-conductors in an Electrostatic Protected Area (EPA) cannot lose their electrostatic charge by attachment to ground.

Wrist Straps In many facilities, people are one of the prime generators of static electricity. Therefore, wrist straps must be used while carrying out maintenance and service on the SITRANS SL, to keep the person wearing it connected to ground potential. A wrist strap consists of the cuff that goes around the person's wrist and the ground cord that connects the cuff to the common point ground.
Work Surface An ESD protective work surface is defined as the work area of a single individual, constructed and equipped to limit damage to ESD sensitive items. The work surface helps to define a specific work area in which ESD sensitive devices may be safely handled. The work surface is connected to the common point ground by a resistance to ground of 106 Ohms to 109 Ohms. This is done by using a soft bench mat, which is connected to ground, on the work surface. All equipment must be connected to grounded outlets and all personnel must wear wrist straps connected to the bench mat using a cord. Bench mat, wrist strap and lightweight cord can be provided from Siemens Laser Analytics in the ESD kit.
