What is Astronaut Ice Cream?The basic explanation for that is this: freeze dried ice cream. The way to make it is to freeze dry ice cream, and there you have it! But the thing is, freeze drying things is not very easy.

FREEZE DRYING

Step one:Freeze it.

Step two:This is the part you can not do at home. You put the frozen ice cream into a vacuum chamber. This extracts the water, drying out the product. They use low temperature heat, as low as 95 degrees. There is ice on the product after this process.

Step three:Now, get the ice off the product. After this, you have successfully freeze dried your product, which in this case, made astronaut ice cream.

Did you know?Astronaut ice cream was invented before Apollo 7? It was enjoyed by most astronauts on the ship. Even more interesting, that was the only time it was taken into space!

Different kinds

People make the normal bag of it, without anything on it. Just normal astronaut ice cream, but different flavors. On the website Vat 19.com, they make little beads of ice cream and astronaut ice cream sandwiches! How clever.
