Assuring aviation fuels are ‘fit for purpose’

Mike Farmery

Clear and Bright Aviation Fuel Consulting

Stoc Expo, 17-19 March 2015, AHOY, Rotterdam

Quality is critical – fuel is not duplicated

Assuring fuel is fit for purpose

Specification – meeting main table values, plus other spec requirements

+

+

Traceability – originally made as aviation fuel and documented through the supply chain

Quality assurance – procedures to prevent contamination

Major civil jet fuel specs

–ASTM D1655 – 15 (for Jet A and Jet A-1)

–UK MoD DEF STAN 91-91 Issue 7 Amd 3 (for Jet A-1 only)

–GOST 10227 for Russian TS-1

–GB 6537 for Chinese No 3 Jet Fuel

• I have tested a representative sample of the batch and it meets the requirements of DEF STAN 91-91 Issue 7 Amd 3 for all the parameters tested.

• The actual test results and test methods used.

• The batch is a mixture of the following batches:

• Batch A certified by RCQ A

• Batch B certified by RCQ B

• I have these documents in my possession

• I confirm that both RCQ A and RCQ B show that the respective batches meet the requirements of DEF STAN 91-91 Issue 7 Amd 2

The essence of aviation fuel QA

A balance between design of facilities and operating procedures

Typically, poor design means more complicated operating procedures and testing. Whereas good design

(eg segregated and dedicated facilities) means simple procedures and testing.
