MODARIA II, Urban Exposures Working Group

• First meeting of WG2 in fall 2016

– 26 participants, 20 countries

• Second meeting of WG2 in May 2017

– 16 participants, 14 countries

• Third meeting of WG2 in October-November 2017

– 24 participants, 16 countries

• Fourth meeting of WG2 in April 2018

– 15 participants, 13 countries

• Fifth meeting of WG2, October 2018

– 20+ participants, 17 countries

• Sixth meeting of WG2 in April 2019

– 15 participants, 12 countries

• Seventh meeting of WG2 this week

– 23+ participants, 19 countries

Objective of the Urban Working Groups

• To test and improve the capabilities of models

used in the assessment of radioactive

contamination in urban environments– Dispersion and deposition events

– Short-term and long-term contaminant redistribution

following deposition events

– Effectiveness of potential countermeasures or remediation

efforts for reducing contamination levels, human exposures,

and doses

• Significance: improved support of decision

making and communication with the public– Planning (“What if. . . ?”)

– Response (e.g., comparison of remediation strategies)

Summary of WG2 Activities

• Short-range atmospheric dispersion exercises

– Boletice (new field test)

– Munich (hypothetical urban dispersion)

• Mid-range atmospheric dispersion exercises

– Šoštanj (Case 3, tracer exercise)

– Meteorological forecasting

– Chalk River (Ar-41 data set)

• Dose assessment exercise

– Fukushima

• Other activities

– Updates on related exercises (Casaccia, NERIS,

ASEAN benchmark modelling)

– Literature review, model review
