What is ASP??

• ASP acronym for “Active Server Pages.”

• ASP is a technology developed by Microsoft.

• Pages using ASP are primarily developed in JavaScript, VBScript , or PerlScript and are integrated into the HTML of Web pages.

• Creation, deployment, and execution of Web Applications and Web Services.

• By using ASP, Web pages can be dynamic, full of ever-changing content, and browser independent.

ASP Architecture

Working

The Basic syntax rule of ASP

• ASP contain the server scripts, which can contain any expressions, statements, procedures, operators valid for the scripting language.

• These server scripts are enclosed by the delimiters <% and %>

• Followed by 1. VBScript 2. JavaScript 3. Other Scripting Languages

An example of ASP

• A management system of a small chat room

• In this management system of the chat room, files are used to record the data.

• This management system is used to remove some users.

• This function is achieved all by files instead of the database.

• At first, establish a temporary file folder. Output the data of the users information such as username, IP address and so on and store in this folder. Then write into the file that recorded the users information orderly and replace the original data in this file.

Benefits of ASP

• Separation of Code from HTML

• Graphical Development Environment

• Update files while the server is running!

• Support for compiled languages

• ASP was designed as a faster and easier alternative to CGI

scripting using Perl or C.

• It provides an easy-to-learn scripting interface along with a

number of predefined objects that simplify many development

tasks, such as maintaining user state and defining global

variables within an application.

What is WAP??

• WAP is for Wireless Application Protocol.

• WAP is a well-defined and broadly supported standard for sending

data to wireless phones and other devices.

• Managed by the wap forum (wapforum.org), supported by hundreds

of members: Phone manufacturers, Phone service providers,

Content providers, Developers.

• WAP application is enable to access WAP sites using WAP

browser.

• The WAP Forum has published a global wireless protocol

specification, based on existing Internet standards such as XML and

IP, for all wireless networks.

Objectives of WAP

Supporting the standard Internet protocols.

Interoperability among service providers.

Overcoming shortfalls of the wireless medium.

Overcoming drawbacks of handheld devices.

Increasing efficiency and reliability.

Providing security, scalibility and extensibility.

Dynamic WAP sites

• Content customized to visitor.• Securing site sections and features.• Query as well as update of server databases.• Generating e-mail on result pages.• Integrating content from other applications or even other sites.• Scheduled content (notifications).

• Dynamic WAP Site Possibilities1.Intranet application possibilities2.Business to business possibilities3.Business to consumer possibilities

• WAP sites services enabled by phone and phone service provider.

• Most recently manufactured phones enabled dynamic WAP sites.

• Major wireless service providers (ATT, Sprint, Verizon, etc.) all support dynamic WAP sites.

• Targeted for phones and mobile users having easy features, drill- down navigation, remember past visits.

• The WAP specification is developed and supported by the wireless telecommunication community so that the entire industry and most importantly, its subscribers, can benefit from a single, open specification.

Applications of dynamic WAP sites

• Financial services

• Travel services

• Gaming and Entertainment

• M-Commerce

• Location-based services

• Enterprise solutions

Advantages of dynamic WAP sites

• Device and network independent application environment

• For low-bandwidth, wireless devices

• Considerations of slow links, limited memory, low computing power, small display, simple user interface.

• Integrated Internet/WWW programming model

• High interoperability

Dynamic WAP sites in common use

• ABCNews.com (abcnews.go.com)• ESPN (espn.go.com)• USA Today (usatoday.com)• Wall Street Journal (wsj.com)• Barnes and Noble (mobile.bn.com)• Weather Channel (weather.com)• AOL (aol.com/anwywhere)• Yahoo (yahoo.com)• eBay (ebay.com)• Expedia.com•travelocity.com
