Which word is an article in the following sentences?• That is an interesting question.

• An elephant never forgets.

• I bought an egg, an apple and an ice cream.

When do we use “a” and when do we use “an”? Talk to a partner and think of an example of each.

Let’s remember the vowels:

• A (cat). long sound A (April)

• E (egg). Long sound E (eagle)

• I (ink). Long sound I (ice cream)

• O (orange) Long sound O (over)

• U (umbrella) Long sound U (uniform).

Choose the correct article for each of these words.

a shark

a rabbit

an octopus an eagle

a unicorn

Remember:

• If the next word starts with a consonant use “a”

• If the next word starts with a vowel use “an”

• But if the word starts with a vowel that sounds like a consonant (e.g. uniform) use “a”.

Can you spot the mistakes?

• Boy the put on his coat.

• A apple a day keeps the doctor away.

• The children were noisy and teacher the told them off.

• Never do a homework.

• An book bag is on the floor not on an peg.
