aboutthedirector
By utilizing painting, sculpture to design, Merry-weather employs a variety of methods and media in order to convey his ideas and introduce stu-dents to alternative methodologies. He has built a career challenging the transience of an immersive practice. As a creator in the fine arts he investi-gate the hybrid object, toying with both the formal and ideological traditions of the art world. As a designer he invents within the global landscape to create simple, sophisticated, pointed results.
The subjects and overall tone of Merryweather’s work speaks to quiet moments, privately expe-rienced. Merryweather cultivates a sensitive awareness of the sublime and mysterious. The final result of his work provides evidence of his aim to seriously approach dramatic investigations and execute them meticulously. By combining simplicity with sophisticated innovation, Mer-ryweather achieves a delicate balance between beauty and dissonant function. Each piece holds a pleasant, fluid kind of design, as well as complex full emotions.
Jay Merryweather maintains an active exhibition schedule, most recently showing at L2Kontem-porary in Los Angeles; Joyce Gordan Gallery in Oakland; the Rothic Art House in Anaheim; and ReCreation, an exhibition at Cerritos College Gal-lery with artists Ron English, Rachel Lachowicz, Dana Maiden, Yoshua Okón and more.
Merryweather has operated his own creative firm, Merryweather Studios, since 1995 and has worked closely with clients like IBM, Fex Ex, and JaneGoodall. Merryweather worked as a designer at the Environmental Systems Research Institute, and is the VP of Design and Brand Development at Premier Mobile Image in Southern California and the Brand director for Motive Arts, Monroe Utah. Merryweather has taught as a professor of Design at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, and has worked as a corporate trainer and creative director to senior staff at PacificCommunications, Costa Mesa, CA.
