Art dans la Cité – VISUAL ARTS IN HOSPITALS

Visual arts in hospital, the necessary uselessness

Art dans la Cité main goal is to introduce contemporary visual arts in hospitals.

Art dans la Cité believes that an artistic environment is an exquisite mean

to humanize healthcare facilities, and to improve quality of life

Art dans la cité invites visual artists to create an original work of Art, intended for a specific site of the hospital (lobby, reception desk, waiting rooms, emergency facilities, corridors, resting rooms…) according to specifications defined with the staff.

The principle of workshop in residenceis the other aspect developed by Art dans la Cite:the artists elaborate their work in situ and associate the patients in their process of creation in narrow links with the medical teams.

The stay in hospital should not be a period of

exclusion.

The life of patient must continues in spite of the double handicap of disease and hospitalization. Hospitalized child must be able to continue to build himself, to learn, to create fantasy.

Art can bring a part of this necessity, such a human part.

Artist's residence in hospital consists in inviting a creator to realize, in front of and with the patients, a work of art. It offers young patients suffering from physical or psychological pathologies, the opportunity to meet with an artist, to learn about his techniques and to participate in the realization of a work of art. The workshop in residence improves the everyday life in hospital, it offers an alternative to the passivity of care and therefore give the hospital an human dimension.
