Case Study of recycled art workshop during Globalfest 2009, coordinated by Mayfield Arts Newbury House, Cork, Ireland

backgroundGlobalFest   2009   is   a   project   coordinated   by   Mayfield  Community  Arts   Centre   that   brings   together   artists  from  Ireland,   Nicaragua,   Guatemala,   Colombia,   Sweden   and  Hungary.   The   young   people   participated   in   a   variety   of  workshops   during   a   period   of   2   weeks:   music,   dance,  theatre,   pyrography,  muralism,   recycle   art   and   costumes.  Some  of  the  work  accomplished  in  these  workshops  led  to  public  performances  during  GlobalFest  on  18th  July.  This  was   the   case   for   the   African   music   and   dance,   the  Colombian   music   and   dance   as   well   as   the   theatre  performances,   which   all   formed   part   of   the   comparsa  (parade).  The   costumes  made   were   worn   by   the   dancers  and   actors   and   the   recycle   art   workshop   created   a   3D  interactive   boardgame   which   was   played   during  GlobalFest.  There   was  a   launch  on  15th  July   at  Mayfield  Library  for  the  mural  and  the  pyrography  work,  which  was  exhibited   that   evening.   All   of   the   workshops   were  facilitated   by   the   following   associations:   Mayfield  Community   Arts   Centre   (Ireland),   Mural   Moral   Group  (Hungary),   Kultur   &   Fritid   (Sweden),   Funarte  (Nicaragua),   La   Cambalacha   (Guatemala),   Centro  Colombo   Americano   and   Corporación   Renovación  Cultural  (Colombia).

day 2 The Game: Making The Figures & QuestionsAfter  some  warm-­up  exercises,  the  group  began  making   the  papier  maché  characters  for   the   game  as  well  as  papier  maché  buildings  and  objects,  using  newspapers,  egg  boxes,  empty  bottles  and  cans.  The  facilitators  made  up  questions  for   the  game  which   related   to   the   environment,   to   different   countries,   cultures   and   languages,   and   to   GlobalFest.   The   game   included  questions  and  activities  such  as  finding  people  from  different  countries  in  the  festival.    

HOW DID WE DO IT?

day 3 Making the Map & InternationalizingThe   facilitators  designed   a  world  map   for   the  boardgame   and   the  group  continued  making  the  papier  maché  figures  and  accessories.  The  questions  for   the  boardgame  were  translated  into  Spanish  in  order  to  make  the  game  more  accessible  and  multi-­cultural.  

day 1 Creating Objects out of Recycled MaterialThe   group  began  working   with   recycled  material   as   they  made   wallets  out  of   cartons   of   juice.  They   also   decided  on  a  boardgame  and  themes  to  work  with  in  relation  to  the  game.  The  themes  were  included  not  only  in  the  boardgame  itself   but  also   in   the   process   of   making   the   game,   as   recycled  materials  were   used   for   it  and   people   from   different   nationalities  participated  in  it.
