As I write these words, I ampreparingtocatchaflighttothedesertsouthwest,whereIhopetospend twoweeks in spiritual re-flection. IundertookasimilartripbackinAugustof2004,stayinginvari-ous monasteries, retreat centers,andhermitagecabinsthroughoutNew Mexico and Arizona; myitinerary12yearslaterismuchthesame. The past 18 months havebeen somewhat eventful (read:stressful),andIknowmyselfwellenoughatthispointtounderstandthatwhatIneedistimeandspacesetasideforsolitude,silence,andprayer. Thedeserthaslongbeenseenasaplaceofspiritualretreat.InMark1,JesuswentawaybyHimselftoa lonely,barrenplace inorderto

pray.InMatthew4,HewentforprayerandfastingbeforefacingthetemptationsoftheEnemy.Beginninginthethirdcentury,as-ceticmonkspulledawayfromsocietyandwentoutintotheEgyptiandesertinordertobetterhearGodandliveouttheirlivesofdevotiontoChrist. Generally speaking, thedesert is anex-treme environment, capable of blisteringheatandfrigidcold.Goingintothedesertisawayofstrippingawaylife’spropsandsystemsofsupport.Whenwe’realoneandquiet and praying, we of necessity mustdealwith our inner demons, those thingswhich work to keep us from devotion toChrist. Certainlyonedoesn’thave to retreat tothe barren desert in order to find silence,solitude,andprayer.Butthereareseasonsin our liveswhich suggest the need for adeliberate,intentionaltimeofconcentratedprayer.I’msogratefultohavesensedsuchaneedinmylife,andtohaveachurchfam-ilywhich encouragesme to act upon it. Ilook forward to seeing each of you uponmyreturn.

OurCommunionOfferingforAprilwillgotosupportingtheRev.ReidandLolaBuchananoftheMissionSociety.ThroughtheirBedNetMinis-try,apartoftheholisticapproachofCommunityHealthEvangelism(CHE),theBuchanansworktoeradicatemalariabyfurnishinginsecticide-treatedbednetsandeducatingabouttheiruse. Bednetsworkbycreatingaprotectivebarrieragainstdeadlymalariacarryingmosquitoesthatbiteatnight.Afamilyoffourcansleepunderaninsecticide-treatedbednet,safefrommalaria,forfourtofiveyears.Thebenefitsofbednetsextendevenfurtherthanprotectingthosesleep-ingunderneaththem.Theinsecticidewovenintoeachnetmakesentirecommunitiessafer–killingandrepellingmosquitoessotheycan’tgoontobiteotherswhomaynotbeprotectedbyanet. Although$3forabednetmaynotsoundlikemuch,thecostmakesthemoutofreachformostpeopleatriskofmalaria,manyofwhomsurviveonlessthan$1aday.Netsareasimple,life-sav-ingsolution,butyourhelpisneededtoprovidethemtothoseinneed. Asalways,communionofferingsmaybemadeanytimeduringthemonth,notjustonCommunionSunday.TocontributetotheBedNetMinistry,simplyspecify“BedNets”onyourmemolineorenvelope.

Overthecourseofthelastyearwehavegonethroughalotofchangeasachurchfamily.AtthistimewefindourselveslookingtoGodforavisionofwhathehasinstoreforusasachurchbody.Thistypeofunderstanding,wisdomanddirectioncomeswhenweearnestlyseekanswersthroughprayer,fastingandmeditation.Weseeindicationsofthisinscripture. DanielwasamanwhoreceivedgreatvisionsfromGod.HeofferedprayerasaformofofferingtotheLord3timesaday.HewasincaptivityinBablyonandwasunabletotakepartinsacrificialofferingsthathewouldhaveobservedinJerusa-lemandinsteadofferedhisprayersuptotheLord.Godblessedhisofferingandhereceivedgreatvisionsandinsight.
