Began as Orbital Debris Satellite

Platform to test satellite systems

Mission Objectives:• Capture and store images

of the Earth’s surface

• Monitor and control

payload temperatures

• Receive and interpret

ground commands

BalloonSat

Imaging Payload

• Microcontroller

• TNC

• Heaters

• Radio

• Batteries

C&DH System

• HP Photosmart E337 Camera – Can take stills or video

• Basic Stamp Microcontroller (BS2)– Programmed in PBasic– Initiates capture every 30 s

Results

• Successful launch April 6, 2008• Traveled 64 miles• Maximum Altitude of 101,466 ft

• Camera worked for 34 mins• Captured a total of 68 pictures 

• C&DH battery torn off

Future Goals

The primary goal of SWE BalloonSat is to launch Embry-Riddle’s first student-built satellite.

BalloonSat is the one first steps in developing a reconfigurable payload capable of launching into space.
