Are Engineers Really

Human?

By: Haynes Curtis

Aircraft = Engineering Win

Aircraft History

Begins well before the 1800’s with many attempts to fly using gliders, balloons, etc.

The components needed to create an airplane were being independently developed

The Wright Brothers put the pieces together in 1903

World War I pushed the development of aircraft forward

Aircraft Engineering

Aerospace is not the only component

Includes Aerospace, Materials, Structural, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering

You can’t deny, it’s pretty awesome.

Aircraft & Society

+Allows for incredibly fast and efficient transportation of goods and people

-Can be used by the wrong people for the wrong reasons (9/11)

-Airport security is a doozy

Chernobyl = Engineering Fail

Chernobyl History

Nuclear meltdown in 1986

Operator error combined with a faulty design flaw

Massive radiation leak

Chernobyl Engineering

Nuclear fission used to create electrical energy

Unique graphite control rods used in Chernobyl reactor to moderate fission

Rod design was the final straw in creating the disaster

Chernobyl & Society

Thousands relocated and affected by radiation

Mutations in people and animals due to radioactive exposure

What Can Be Learned?

Engineers are actually human and learn from mistakes and successes just like anyone else

Aviation Wartime can often accelerate the advancement of technology

Chernobyl Better precautions must be made in encapsulating and protecting nuclear reactors
