Archives open - open archives? A case study(Joachim Kemper, Speyer)

1. Archives open – Web 2.0

• Conference: Open Archives? Archives 2.0 in the German speaking

countries (and in the European context), 22.-23.11. 2012, Speyer

• Social media is so large, that you can no longer ignore it. Large: in

the sense of concentrating attention. Social media is so large, that

it must be regarded as the current state of development of the

entire Internet. (Sascha Lobo, Blogger, http://saschalobo.com/)

• But: Are german speaking archives „late bloomer“? It seems so -

institutional archival Web 2.0-pages are uncommon in Germany (as

well as in e.g. Austria, Switzerland or Slovenia…)

• Case study: city of Speyer archives (working in Web 2.0 since the

beginning of 2011) – new ways of public relations and

communication, but much more possibilities (tagging,

crowdsourcing, collaborative descriptions…)

2. Case study: City of Speyer archives (Facebook,

Twitter, Slideshare, Flickr)

• Work expended for Web 2.0: ca. 2-3 hours a week, daily posts on

Facebook/Twitter

• Web 2.0-Pilot scheme in Speyer, since March 2011 (Facebook-

page „Speyer“: ca. 2.300 fans; FB-page „Stadtarchiv Speyer“: more

than 500 fans)

• „Archives 2.0“ means: quantum leap in public perception (regional

as well as archival community)

• Posting on Facebook means e.g.: Actual informations (and photos)

about practical archival work, „live-photos“, invitations/reports about

events, presentation of historical photos…

• Statistics: more than 600.000 call ups of articles („Beitragsaufrufe“),

much feedback („likes“, comments)

• Twitter: Limited number of characters („microblogging“), but easy

to use and up-to-dateness! After one year: more than 4.000

„tweets“, more than 300 „follower“ (= „fans“, friends)

• Language: german, often also english (Facebook: german)

• Twitter: Target audience very relevant for archives (informational

network)

• Social media – „Dashboard“: Twitter and Facebook, e.g.

TweetDeck

• Slideshare: PowerPoint-presentations and other documents

(PDF), like lectures in Speyer („Mittwochabend im Stadtarchiv“)

and lectures abroad – easy sharing-options (Twitter, Facebook,

Google+)

• 28 presentations/documents, more than 10.000 views

• Flickr: Thematic collections (photos), presentation of

new stocks, archival exhibitions (online and also

traditional – e.g. in reading room)

• Second function: user-generated informations

• Conclusion: Our experiences with „social media“ are

overall very positive, much „traffic“!

• Little foresight: Weblog (topics: regional history and

archival contents – of course cross-frontier: Alsace-

Lorraine/France) ?
