Magazine’s night with TINA ARENA At our first magazine meeting we agreed we wanted something GRAND for our front page
and we researched big events coming to Cairns. Someone suggested Tina Arena, and as big
fans we hopped to it...we googled her and got a contact, and then for weeks and weeks we
politely kept bugging her personal representative. Our Chief Editor, Jana, sent her PR an
email explaining who we are and requesting to meet and interview Tina Arena to find out
what’s on her Bucket List. The week the before the concert we phoned again and learnt that
that Sheridan had received a phone call to explain that she could not do an do an interview,
BUT, instead offered the Magazine Reporters complimentary tickets to her concert!!! What
an unexpected surprise for us, and boy did we celebrate!!! Jana was so overwhelmed that
she nearly cried and Glen’s grin was so big we were worried he’d face would crack.
Bindi Sutton came along too and all dressed up at the Convention Centre, we were bursting
with excitement. As soon as the doors opened we went in and OMG– we had the best seats
ever!!! Three rows from the front– we couldn't believe our luck!! We all agreed Tina Arena
was tops. And that she looked really gorgeous and her voice—WOW—a very powerful voice.
Tina was really funny too and had a few good jokes with the audience, such as; there was one
man up the front who was so overly excited and Tina told him not to peak too early, and she
kept checking in on him through–out the show, to make sure he had not peaked yet- it was so
funny. Another man in the audience yelled out ‘You should marry a Queensland, and Tina
laughed and said, ‘Sorry buddy, I do love you all, but you can forget Queenslanders, because
I am married to a French man!!’
We got to dance right up the front and Tina looked right at Glen and gave him a wink. Lynette
reached out and touched her finger tips. Jane and Karen joked saying they felt left out be-
cause she did not look or touch or wink at them, but Felisha didn't, because she said she got
lots of great shots and that Tina looked through the camera at her. Glen could not stop smil-
ing and we all betted that he had really sore cheeks the next day. Felisha and Jana explained it
was the first time they had ever been to a big concert like that and both said they gave it a
score of 100/10. Lynette said she really loved all of her outfits, especially the last one and Bin-
di said she was very lucky to come along. You could say, we all went home ‘happy campers!’
SIGN LANGUAGE Reported by Glen Carr
My name is Glen Carr and I have learnt sign language since I was a toddler. I am
not hearing impaired and can understand everything people say, and I can also
say some words, but I have difficulty communicating with my voice. Sign lan-
guage helps me and lots of people all over the world to communicate.
Sign language was the main way I communicated when I was growing up. I still
know the letters of the alphabet and can sign a lot of words. It was fun teach-
ing the magazine group the signs as part of my report. Sign language is still one
of the best ways I can communicate with friends, but at home I have a com-
munication device as well that is really helpful.
It is great when they have sign language interpreters and subtitles on the TV to
help hearing impaired people understand. Sometimes it can also be really fun-
ny, like one time I watched a stand up comedian on TV who had a sign lan-
guage Interpreter on stage and the Comedian kept saying cheeky and funny
words so the sign language Interpreter had to keep doing the funny signs, that
really made me laugh . I know all the letters of the alphabet and can teach you.
See if you can figure out what I am saying in the photographs below. I will give
you a clue, my favourite thing to do is to go the…
Behind the Scenes of Fool’s Gold Fool’s Gold is our original story that we wrote. It was inspired from an old fable called The En-
chanted Rock. Last year I was part of the scriptwriting program where we learnt how to create a
story and write a script. Originally it was a play, but we decided to turn it into a short film. It is
very exciting to be a part of this short film, everyone is really enthusiastic; in fact a lot of us
practice our lines every day and do rehearsals at morning tea and lunchtime. I have been cast as
the Queen and I am really enjoying this role. The Queen is a bit evil and crazy and acts like an
ape. It is a lot of work; I have had to learn all my lines and actions, but I am loving it all.
Our acting/filming group wanted to shoot around the iconic locations of Cairns, but by the time
we got to the location and Karen set up the video camera and started to film, it would already
be lunch time and it would have been a complete waste of time. So we decided as a group it
would be better if we film the start around iconic locations in Cairns and then the rest of the
scenes with the Dragon, the Queen and the Village People at the Community Hub, and it wasn’t
as stressful.
Behind the scenes information about the characters and preparing for our roles:
Dragon: Hayden plays the Dragon. Whenever the Dragon is on film he is in full costume and makeup. He is also half dragon and half crocodile. Hayden does a fantastic growl!
Guards: Troy and Alex.M are the Guards. Whenever the Guards are on film they are in full cos-tume and makeup. They are the Queen’s guards and after they have to help the Queen to get on the Dragon’s back, and end up with their heads in the Queen’s bottom, they quit and join the village people.
Queen: I (Jana) play the Queen and she is really evil. She is very rich and has taken all of the gold coins off the Village People and left them to starve. The Guards and the Dragon work together to try to stp the Queen from taking over the world...but if you want to know what happens, you will have to wait to see our short film!!!!
Village people: played by Alexis, Alex. H., Felisha, Mitch and then Troy and Alex. M. At the start the Village People are happy, but after the Queen comes into play they become poor, but again you will have to watch our film to see what happens!!!
Fool’s Gold is a hilarious short film. It also has some important messages. We all feel pretty clev-er and when it is complete we will enter it into short film competitions.
Grief & Loss How to feel better & heal
When you lose someone you love it is hard to explain all the different feelings you
have. The feelings are called grief. But sometimes people feel other things too, like
feeling heart broken, angry and frustrated.
My name is Lynette and I just lost someone I love and I feel sad, sad to miss the
person I love. But I also feel glad and happy for our time together. I want to write this
report because it might help me to heal my heart and because I want to share some
positive ways to help you feel better if you are grieving, and it will also help me to
feel good if I can help.
If you are grieving and feeling frustrated or angry it helps to feel better if you remind
yourself to remember the good times and be glad and happy for your time together. I
get myself a cup of tea and sit down and try hard to remember the nice times to-
gether and the lovely memories.
Sometimes it helps to do something nice for yourself. I suggest going for a drive to
the beach or to the Tablelands for a day out. You could go to lunch at the Edge Hill
Hotel for 2 hours and eat your favourite things.
You will have good days and bad days. Make a point a to get on with life. Make
yourself get up and go out and do the things you love.
If you feel down try and cheer yourself up. A way to cheer yourself up is to try and
remember funny things, like the time I had the toilet paper stuck to me and made a
train from my toilet to my bedroom-that one always cracks me up. Watch a funny
movie. Hang out with funny people. Laughter really is the best medicine.
You will have your ups and downs. If you find yourself looking for the person and
then realise they are gone, it will hurt, but just take big deep yoga breathes.
Family and friends are amazing, and it is okay to turn to them for support. Friends
will probably bring flowers and cook meals and take
you shopping. We go to church with them on the week-
ends. We also get a lot of phone calls to see how we
are. I hope all of this helps you to heal your heart.
Thanks to everyone who has helped me through my
grief. Thanks for all your love and care.

OUR IDEAS FOR an END OF
YEAR BREAK-UP PARTY
Tips for what NOT to do at a break up party:
Don’t recommend serving up baked beans, curried eggs or too much garlic
Don’t mix up peoples names
Don’t taste too many beers and make an idiot of yourself
Don’t wear long sleeves when you are cooking
Don’t start arguments over girlfriends
Don’t look at the host’s private parts when they are lean-
ing over and serving food
Don’t start a food fight-unless you plan to clean it up!!
If it is at someone elses house, don’t be a sticky beak
and sneak around their house
MENU SUGGESTIONS
Breadsticks & a dip Banana choc muffins Sausage rolls
Devil’s eggs (but be wary if you are going to close dance with
someone afterwards)
Pikelets Salmon rolls Chocolate pizzas (bit of a fun risk)
Drinks: Sexy Sling (a non-alcoholic cocktail) - that will get the party going!!
Tips for what to DO if you are hosting a party:
Serve finger food, it is easier to eat and clean up afterwards
Take some menu risks and have fun with the food
you serve
Play some upbeat, cool music
Set food on a table so everyone can get to it
After the food move the tables so people can dance
Little gifts or awards are fun to hand out during the night
