Open Book project targets Arab World

Open Education in the Arab World is still in an initial phase

The project consists of a web system (Platform) which allows uploading and downloading of different learning materials by Instructors and Students.

Videos, audio lessons, animated learning materials, documents and presentations will be freely used and shared.

The platform will be fully localized for Arabic audience and will cover different curricula for K-12 and undergraduate students.

The Goal of the Open Book/OER project

The focus of the Open Book/OER project for the Arab World should be on STEM (Sciences Technology Engineering Maths) subjects.

The project have 4 years.

the first two years focused on raising awareness of OER among faculty and policy makers, translation of existing OER and production of OER from the Arab World,

The second two years will focus on building the project and evaluation of impact.

Overall goal of the program: Regional production and dissemination of educational materials in support of STEM

Details of the Open Book/OER project

1. Awareness-raising Activitiesa. Support for faculty workshops and regional conference on

OER to include a training of trainers; b. Development of guides for both users and developers of OER;c. Assess what translated OER STEM resources are needed,

and/or already exist across region.2. Proof of Concept Activities

a. Translation of 8 courses into Arabic (selection of courses to be determined);

b. Encourage Contributions of OER from faculty at universities across the region

c. Establish repositories where OER will be stored.

Recommended activities for the first two years.

1. Continuation of awareness-raising activities as needed;1.Additional translations of OER into Arabic, exploration of a crowd-sourced translation model; 2.Broadening OER contributions of faculty from the region;3.Encouraging policy development at national levels;4.Co-develop curricula/courses among faculty from universities in the region, to be released as OER;5.Link regional OER repositories into an overall portal for the whole MENA region6.Impact studies based on success criteria defined during the first two years.
