BIG PICTURE

How can technology help improve my teaching and student learning?

What shifts do I have to make in my current teaching practices in order to successfully integrate technology?

What barriers might I run into? What are the first steps I will take?

SHIFT HAPPENS!

WHAT DOES THIS TELL YOU ABOUT OUR SCHOOLS TODAY?DO WE NEED CHANGE?

Imparting knowledge to students is instruction, helping them develop

knowledge is education

21st Century Learners-what are they?

21st century skills learned through our curriculum, which is interdisciplinary, integrated, project-based, and more, include and are learned within a project-based curriculum by utilizing the seven survival skills advocated by Tony Wagner in his book, The Global Achievement Gap:

21ST CENTURY -7 SURVIVAL SKILLSCritical Thinking and Problem Solving

Collaboration across Networks and Leading by Influence

Agility and Adaptability

Initiative and Entrepreneurialism

Effective Oral and Written Communication

Accessing and Analyzing Information

Curiosity and Imagination

NEW DEFINITIONS

Schools will go from ‘buildings’ to 'nerve centers', with walls that are porous and transparent, connecting teachers, students and the community to the wealth of knowledge that exists in the world.”

Teacher - From primary role as a dispenser of information to orchestrator of learning and helping students turn information into knowledge, and knowledge into wisdom.

The 21st century will require knowledge generation, not just information delivery, and schools will need to create a “culture of inquiry”.

First – we must maintain student interest by helping them see how what they are learning prepares them for life in the real world.

Second – we must instill curiosity, which is fundamental to lifelong learning.

Third – we must be flexible in how we teach. Fourth – we must excite learners to become

even more resourceful so that they will continue to learn outside the formal school day.”

Learner - In the past a learner was a young person who went to school, spent a specified amount of time in certain courses, received passing grades and graduated.  Today we must see learners in a new context:

WHAT IS TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION?

When teachers view technology (e.g. effective and engaging software &

online resources) as an integral part of the curriculum and daily classroom activities.

OUR BENCHMARK

By the end of this class teachers will be able to devise at least three examples of how they could integrate technology in their classroom and demonstrate one lesson to the class.

EASIEST WAYS TO BEGIN

ASSIGNMENTS Classroom Observation and Interview (Due March 21st)Observe a teacher using technology in the classroom. Take notes on how and why the technology was used, how it was received by the students, and its overall effectiveness in achieving the instructional goals and objectives of the lesson. Conduct a brief interview with the teacher regarding the lesson and your observations. Focus on: a) how the lesson was developed, b) how and why the technology used was selected, and c) how effective the teacher believes the lesson is with technology compared to how effective it would be without the use of technology. Write a brief report (1-2 type written pages) addressing your observations, the teacher’s comments, and your reflections on the role of the technology used in the lesson. Use Observation Checklist

Pick a topic in your content area, use a search engine to find ten websites in your content area. Copy/paste on a word document the URL of each site, write a short annotation of what you will find at each site-save and bring to class next week

Write a one page reflection, discuss how you could personally use technology, what are the barriers, what could you do to

overcome the barriers that might exist. Discuss the benefits of technology use in the classroom, please site the
