1. BackgroundAswellaslicorice,productsmadefromfruitgum,suchasjellybabies,arefirmfavouritesinsweetshops.Dependingonthetypehowever,suchsweetseithercontainsweetfoamorevenaremadeentirelyofsweetfoam.ThisisthecasewithmanyoftheproductsfromtheMEDERERSußwarenvertriebsGmbHCompanyinFürth,whichmarketsitsproductsunderthebrandnameTrolli.Thesweetscanconsistofseverallayerswheretypically,thelowerlayerismadeoffoamandthetoponeoffruitgum.Oneexampleofthisisthewellknow"Sourapplerings"fromTrolli.

2. Measurement requirements

Tostartwith,thefreshfoamisproducedinaspecialmixmachineandthenaerated.Followingthis,thefoamisgivenitstasteandcolourthroughtheinlinedosingofadditives.Then,thefoamleavesthemachineandisformedintotherequiredshapes,e.g.bears,frogsorringsintheso-calledMogulmachine,bybeingdosedintostarchfilledmouldboards.

Thatthefoamgetstherequiredflavouringandcolouring,magnetic-inductiveandCoriolismassflowmetersaredeployedoneachline.AnOPTIFLUX6000DN25measuresthevolumeflowofthefresh,stilltastelessfoamasitcomesoutofthemixmachine.Atthesametime,variousadditives,namelythecolouring,citricacidandaromasaremeteredin.

Withthreeofthematerialsontheotherhand,OPTIFLUX6000withsmallernominalDNdiameters(2.5and4)areusedforthemeasurement.OnematerialdoesnothavesufficientconductivityandforthatreasonismeasuredusingasmallCoriolisOPTIMASS3000deviceinDN3.

Becauseofthedifficultinstallationconditionsinthedispensingsystem,themeasurementsystemsweredeliveredasaremoteversion.Thesignalconverterswereinstalledas19"rackversionsinaseparatecabinet.TheconnectiontothecontrolsystemwasrealizedthroughaProfibusDPcommunication.

TwosystemsofthistypewerebuiltbytheHansaIndustrieMixerCompanyandinstalledandcommissionedatMedererinFürth.Eventhoughmeasuringfoamwithahighaircontentisnoteasy,theflowmetersareworkingtothecompletesatisfactionofthecustomer.Inspiteoftheveryrestrictedspaceavailablefortheinstalltionof16measuringdevices,thesystemoffershighlevelsofrepeatabilityandaccuracy.
