1.0 PURPOSE OF MEMO
The purpose of this memo is to describe and analyze a potential light plan for athletic fields at Loyola
Marymount University, which was prepared by Musco Lighting, LLC, to provide nighttime illumination
of the existing outdoor recreational facilities on the Loyola Marymount University Campus (Campus).
Musco Lighting specializes in the design and manufacture of systems for lighting recreation and athletic
fields throughout the U.S. and worldwide.
This memo includes (1) a technical introduction to light, (2) a description of the existing outdoor
recreational facilities on the Campus, (3) a description of the illustrative light plan by facility, (4) an
analysis of light spillover and skyglow as a result of the illustrative light plan, and (5) recommended
mitigation to reduce light spillover.
The illustrative lighting plan evaluated in this memo is conceptual only and may be subject to change at
the time of installation at athletic facilities on the LMU Campus. Future light spillover levels at off-site
locations were predicted using computer models, not actual field measurements. Accordingly, the
modeling of future off-site light levels associated with this lighting plan assumes the absence of any
screening of off-site light spillover (that is, no existing or future walls or vegetation in proximity to
facilities to be lighted), in order to evaluate the greatest potential for impacts. As discussed above, this
conservative approach results in some light spillage in a few discrete locations on the boundary of
Campus. However, if conditions remain as they are today, existing vegetation on the perimeter of
Campus in proximity to facilities that are proposed to be lighted, as well as the 130-foot-wide by 37-foot-
tall left field scoreboard and nearby wall that stand between the edge of the field and the adjacent
residential properties on McConnell Avenue, would greatly reduce off-site light spillover in this area.
Additional vegetation planted in the future, and the continued presence of the scoreboard and nearby
wall, also would reduce spillover. Further, as discussed in Section 7.0, Recommendations, of this report,
various additional measures, including adjusting light locations and visors and construction of additional
screens or vegetative buffers can reduce light spillover to minimal levels at off-site locations.
2.0 INTRODUCTION TO LIGHT
"Light" refers to light emissions, or the degree of brightness, generated by a given source. Artificial
lighting may be generated from point sources (i.e., focused points of origin representing unshielded light
sources) or from indirectly illuminated sources of reflected light. Light may be directed downward to
illuminate an area or surface, cast upward into the sky by an unshielded fixture and refracted (dispersed)
by atmospheric conditions (skyglow), or cast sideways and outwards onto off-site properties (spillover).
Skyglow and light spillover are considered forms of light pollution.

Nighttime illumination may also cause nighttime glare, which refers to direct, intense, focused light, as
well as reflected light, and hampers visibility. Glare caused by direct sources of light generally originates
from mobile and therefore transitory sources, such as automobiles, but may also originate from
particularly intense stationary sources, such as floodlights.
3.0 EXISTING CONDITIONS
The majority of LMU’s athletic fields and facilities are concentrated in the southernmost portion of LMU’s
Campus. Facilities include Sullivan Soccer Field, Page Baseball Stadium, Smith Softball Field, Higgins
Golf Center (which consists of a putting green, two bunkers, and a driving cage), the LMU Tennis Center,
and the University Pool at Burns Recreation and Aquatic Center. Hannon Field, which is at the southern
end of the portion of Campus historically referred to as the Burns Campus, and Leavey Field, which is
located atop Drollinger Parking Plaza in the area historically referred to as the Leavey Campus, are used
for intramural recreational activities. With the exception of the Tennis Center and University Pool,
outdoor Campus athletic facilities are currently not lighted after dark; no high-mast flood lighting (i.e.,
multiple light fixtures mounted atop poles of approximately 50 feet or more in height or more) or other
sources of substantial outdoor, nighttime lighting are present at these facilities. Nighttime light levels on
the Campus are comparable to those within the surrounding residential neighborhoods.
4.0 ILLUSTRATIVE LIGHT PLAN
The illustrative light plan has been designed to achieve a specific level of lighting uniformity for each
facility that is adequate for both recreational and competitive use. The illustrative light plan for each
facility is described below. The proposed number of poles, pole and mounting height ranges, and number
of luminaires are described for each facility. The model assumes “Green Generation” luminaire types,
with a rated lamp life of 5,000 hours and an average of 134,000 lumens per lamp (light output of the lamp
itself). The range of illumination levels provided on the facility is described in horizontal foot-candles at a
level of 3 feet above grade.
As discussed more fully below, for a number of reasons, various fields require different levels of
illumination, depending on the type of use. The illustrative lighting designs range from approximately 30
foot-candles of illumination on Hannon Field to approximately 100 foot-candles on the field of Page
Baseball Stadium. For safety reasons, more light is required to light sports such as baseball, softball, and
lacrosse, since they employ smaller, faster moving objects. Thus, for safety reasons, more light is
recommended on fields for these sports. Additionally, due to the level of competition, more light is
recommended for practice and play of intercollegiate sports than is recommended for intramural or club
sports.

The illustrative lighting designs also include poles of varying heights. Taller poles help control light
spillover because the taller poles allow lights to be focused more precisely on the playing area. Thus, the
taller the poles, the smaller the light spillage. Additionally, different visors can be installed on the light
fixtures to control spillover and skyglow. These visors generally range in length from 5 and 7 inches to 14
inches, with longer visors providing better control. The longer 7 and 14 inch visors, however, cannot be
used for baseball and softball fields because these longer visors limit the up lighting for the field such that
players cannot adequately track or see fly balls.
4.1 Leavey Field
Leavey Field is located on the roof deck of Drollinger Parking Plaza. Drollinger is located along a sloping
portion of LMU Drive adjacent to Burns Campus. Drollinger’s roof deck, and therefore Leavey Field, sits
at the same elevation as the campus and off-site 78th Street neighborhood to the south of the parking
structure, but the parking structure rises to a maximum height of approximately 30 feet above adjacent
grade along its northwest elevation, fronting on LMU Drive. As shown in Figure 1, 9 poles would be
installed at grade surrounding Drollinger Parking Plaza in order to illuminate Leavey Field. The poles
would range in height from 70 feet above grade along the south edge of Leavey Field to 110 feet above
grade along its northwest edge, and accordingly would range from 70 to 80 feet above the surface of the
playing field surface. The three tallest poles, with heights of 100 and 110 feet above grade, would be
located along the northwest elevation of Drollinger Parking Plaza and would illuminate the northwest
edge of Leavey Field. The remaining six poles would be located along the southern elevation (four poles)
and eastern elevation (two poles) of Drollinger; the poles along the east elevation would be several
hundred feet north of the Campus’s southern property line. A total of 71 luminaires would be installed
on the 9 poles.
Light levels on Leavey Field would range from 31 to 60 foot-candles when all 71 luminaires are operating.
Although the spillover analysis below conservatively assumes all 71 luminaires are lit, the light levels
could be adjusted to lower levels (i.e., 39 luminaires) under the illustrative lighting plan, depending on
the type of sport and level of play the field is being used for.
4.2 Hannon Field
As shown in Figure 2, four poles would be installed on Hannon Field, including two on the eastern
perimeter of the field close to Loyola Boulevard, and two on the western perimeter of the field. Each
would extend 70 feet above the surface of the field. A total of 26 luminaires would be installed on these
four poles. The luminaires would be mounted at the top of the poles.

Light levels on Hannon Field would range from 18 to 43 foot-candles when all 26 luminaires are
operating.
4.3 Sullivan Soccer Field
As shown in Figure 3, eight poles would be installed on Sullivan Field: four along the eastern edge of the
field adjacent to Page Baseball Stadium and four along the western edge near Loyola Boulevard. They
would range in height from 80 to 90 feet extending above the surface of the field. A total of 82 luminaires
would be installed on these eight poles. The luminaires would be mounted at the top of the poles.
Light levels on Sullivan Field would range from 63 to 88 foot-candles when all 82 luminaires are
operating.
4.4 Page Baseball Stadium
As shown in Figure 4, eight poles would be installed in Page Stadium around the perimeter of the field.
Two poles in the northwestern corner of the field would illuminate home plate, the pitcher’s mound, and
a portion of the infield; an additional two poles would illuminate the infield (center, left and right fields);
and four poles on the eastern and southern perimeter would illuminate the outfield. Each pole would
extend 90 feet above the surface of the field. A total of 125 luminaires would be installed on these eight
poles. The luminaires would be mounted at heights ranging from 70 to 90 feet above the surface of the
field. The three poles closest to home plate would utilize back-to-back mounting configurations to also
provide light to the warm-up area and bull-pens located north and west of the home plate and the
surrounding bleachers.
Light levels on Page Stadium would range from 89 to 116 foot-candles in the infield and 52 to 99 foot-
candles in the outfield when 120 of the 125 luminaires are operating (the remaining 5 luminaires would
not contribute to the lighting of Page Stadium, but would instead provide lighting solely to the warm-up
area described above).
4.5 Smith Softball Field
As shown in Figure 5, six poles would be installed on Smith Field. Two poles along the western perimeter
of the field would illuminate home plate, left field, and the bleachers; two poles along the southern
perimeter would illuminate right field and the outfield; and two poles along the eastern perimeter would
illuminate the outfield. They would range in height from 70 to 75 feet above the surface of the field. A
total of 38 luminaires would be installed on these 6 poles. The luminaires would be mounted at heights

ranging from 70 to 75 feet above the surface of the field. These poles would also provide lighting to the
two bull-pens located immediately west and north of Smith Field.
Light levels on Smith Field would range from 65 to 89 foot-candles in the infield and 42 to 72 foot-candles
in the outfield when 34 of the 38 luminaires are operating (the remaining 4 luminaires would not
contribute to the lighting of Smith Field, but would instead provide lighting to Higgins Golf Center.
4.6 University Pool
As shown in Figure 6 , four poles would be installed on the University Pool deck in the northeast,
southeast, northwest, and southwest corners of the pool deck. Each pole would extend to a height of
90 feet above the deck surface. A total of 50 luminaires would be installed on these four poles. The
luminaires would be mounted at the top of the poles.
Light levels on the pool itself would range from 115 to 137 foot-candles when all 50 luminaires are
operating. Light levels on the pool deck would range from 43 to 124 foot-candles when all 50 luminaires
are operating.
5.0 LIGHT SPILLOVER ONTO RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY LINES
Models were prepared by Musco Lighting to evaluate light spillover levels at the nearest residential
properties and the findings of those models is presented below. Residential properties along W. 78th
Street, W. 80th Street and McConnell Avenue would be subject to light spillover from lighting installed in
existing athletic fields. As previously stated, since models were used to predict future off-site light
spillover levels, model results assume the absence of any intervening screening devices such as
vegetation or a wall, including existing vegetation and the existing, to-remain 130-foot-wide by 37-foot-
tall left field scoreboard and nearby wall, and are therefore conservative estimates of off-site light
spillover.
Recommendations to reduce off-site spillover levels are presented in Section 7.0, Recommendations, of
this report.
5.1 South of W. 78th Street
As shown in Figure 7, lighting installed in Leavey Field would generate a maximum spillover of
0.50 foot-candles (horizontal) at the property lines of residential properties south of the Campus along W.
78th Street.

5.2 South of W. 80th Street
As shown in Figure 8 , lighting installed at the facilities located in the southeastern corner of Campus,
primarily Sullivan Soccer Field and Page Baseball Stadium, would generate a maximum light spillover of
2.01 foot-candles (horizontal) at the residential property lines along W. 80th Street.
5.3 East of Campus (West of McConnell Avenue)
As shown in Figure 9, lighting installed in the southeastern corner of Campus, primarily at Page Baseball
Stadium, Smith Softball Field, and Higgins Golf Center, would generate light spillover at levels ranging
from 0.75 to 10.42 foot-candles at adjacent residential property lines along McConnell Avenue. Light
spillover is greatest (i.e., in excess of 3 foot-candles) on the properties immediately east of Page Baseball
Stadium. Spillover levels are below 2 foot-candles at the remaining property lines along McConnell
Avenue.
5.4 Summary of Light Spillover
Table 1 identifies the maximum light levels that would be generated at the property lines of the
residences along these roadways without any intervening screening devices as a result of the illustrative
light plan.

6.0 SKYGLOW
The introduction of lighting to these outdoor recreational facilities could contribute to skyglow if light is
cast upward into the sky by an unshielded fixture and refracted by atmospheric conditions. All light
fixtures would be directed downward to illuminate the intended surface. Furthermore, all luminaires
under the illustrative light plan are equipped with visors. As discussed above, visors reduce skyglow,
with larger visors being more effective. However, smaller 5-inch visors are required for sports such as
baseball and softball where, for competitive as well as safety reasons, it is critical that players be able to
see and track fly balls.
7.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
To reduce light spillover onto neighboring residential property as a result of the illustrative light plan, the
lighting contractor would adjust lighting fixtures and visors upon installation to account for conditions in
the neighborhood and reduce off-site lighting spillover impacts as much as possible.
Additionally, to reduce skyglow, the lighting contractor would again adjust lighting fixtures and visors
upon installation to account for conditions in the neighborhood and the fixtures would use the largest
visors appropriate for the activities on the field.
Finally, vegetation and other screening or filtering devices should be maintained or supplemented at the
edges of lit fields or at the Campus perimeter such that light spillover would not exceed 2 foot-candles
(horizontal) on adjacent residential properties.
