The word ‘Apartheid’

The term apartheid comes from the Afrikaans word for "apartness”.

Brief Definition

Social and political policy of racial segregation and discrimination enforced by white minority governments in South Africa from 1948 to 1994.

White Domination

• Afrikaners were the driving force behind the idea that black Africans should not only be segregated from whites, but should also have very few political rights.

• Racial discrimination was associated with the enactment of 1948 apartheid laws.

Examples of Apartheid Laws

• Immorality Act: made marriages between blacks and whites illegal.

• Native Service Contract: African labourer could not be absent from employer without permission.

• Native Representation Act: black Africans could not vote alongside Whites. They would vote separately for their own members of Parliament – who had to be White!

Preferential Treatment For Whites

Nelson MandelaLed African National Congress, a black liberation group that opposed South Africa’s white minority government and apartheid.Initially opposed to violence, but after a massacre of unarmed black South Africans in 1962, he began advocating acts of sabotage against the government.
