Bullying and Bystander Behavior

- Bullying: What is it? - Bullying is typically only talked about at the school

age level, but it is often seen in various forms on college campuses. (ie cyber bullying, hazing)

- Bystander Behavior - Decreased likelihood an individual will intervene on

behalf of another if there is the perception that other bystanders are present. (Howard, Landua, Pryor, 2014)

Men, the man box, and bystander behavior

● Societal expectations of men are to:o Hypsersexualize womeno Physical Strengtho Be emotionless

● Men embrace societal expectations, the Man Box, out of fear (Berkowitz, 2010)o Men’s fear of disapproval from other men intensifies the influence of

misconceptions regarding how men should behave.

How College Men Feel about Being Menand “Doing the Right Thing”

● “Men often conform to an ideal of masculinity that we don’t like because the consequences of non-conforming can be serious.” (Berkowitz, p.2, 2010)

Step Up Program

● National Step-Up, developed at University of Arizona, program educates students to be an active bystander and help others (Step-Up CITATION)

● Used at Miami University to educate all students on active bystander, but focuses on:o Student Athleteso Greek Studentso Associated Student Governmento LGBTQ* community
