WhilstmostorganisationswouldbeverypleasedwithanimprovedprofitpositiontheIROactuallyhasnoprofitmotive and therefore when considering the remaining circa £40,000(55%)ofprofitincreaseitisimportanttoreassureourselves that any savings have not been made at the expense of the member or student experience.
In this case, it has been achieved mainly by running vacancies in the core team and a reduction in team expensesresultingina£35,000saving.
The remaining profit was created from savings noted during the year in the monthly accounts. For example £5,000onIROstaffundertakingwebsitework,£3,000on photography and member engagement activities we didnotrun(circa£4,700).WhilstLearningProductsreturned little of its forecast income during the year this was compensated for in part by the commensurate saving intheoutlayoftheservicesitrequires(e.g.trainerdayfeesetc.)
TheIROhasmadethecomebackonacademicsaleswhich was required of it after the previous year and this has helped it make a bigger profit than forecast. However, otherelementsoftheimprovementcouldnotberelied upon to be the basis of future growth. Duringthisyear, theIROorganisationhasshownitsability to provide a consistent and reliable turn-key service
in membership and academic services – a great base to work from. A new team structure with an increased marketfocusandabusinessplanincludingaMastersprogramme and accredited short courses should provide the basis for sustainable growth.
The new three-year business plan is detailed overleaf. Put together by member input and the Board, the new plan focuses on the push to establish the professional status of operations in the new skills landscape of rail.
