Animal Pictures:
Talk about each page of animals & where they live (e.g. ‘look at all of the Australian Animals. They live in the Australian bush’, ‘These are farm
animals’, ‘These animals live in the water’).
Name the animals with your child / children. Talk about where they live, what they look like - size, colour, body parts / features (e.g. ‘the emu has 2
long legs, a long neck and feathers’), how they move (e.g. ‘a kangaroo hops’, ‘a fish swims in the water’). Ask your child / children to name the
animals.
Sorting:
Place the picture scenes (e.g. Australian bush, Zoo, Farm, Water) in front of your child / children.
Cut up the small animal pictures.
Ask you child / children to help you sort the animals into their habitat / place where they live. Ask your child to name each animal and then tell you
where it lives.
Sound Awareness:
Clap out the syllables (beats) in the animal names (e.g. ‘wom-bat’, ‘oc-to-pus’, ‘ra-bbit’, ‘rhi-no-ce-ros’).
Talk about the sound that the animal’s name starts with (e.g. ‘kangaroo starts with a ‘k’ sound’).
