• In India, there are approximately 10 million blind in both the eyes & 5 million blind in one eye, that makes one-third of the total blind population of the world.

• 14.9 out of every 1000 people in India are blind as compared to just 3 per 1000 in developed countries.

Annual requirement of corneas in India:1,00,000.Average annual collection of eyes in India - 22,000.

Cornea from patient with anterior segment surgery may be used if screened by specular microscopy and meet the eye bank’s endothelial standards.

Reasons for poor eye donation in India

• Unawareness regarding eye donation• Religious misconceptions• Existing laws – only doctors (MBBS) can

perform the procedure

SOURCE OF DONOR EYES

• Consented donor eyes• Pledged eyes• Eyes from unclaimed bodies

PLEDGING• Eye donation can

happen irrespective of whether a person has pledged his/her eyes or not

• Pledging is for creating awareness and it acts as a reminder to do this job.

OCULAR TISSUE RETREIVAL

Nobody is charged for making eye donation. The only cost to encounter is one local telephone call.

Enucleation to be performed

• Within 24 hrs of death if body is refrigerated

• Within 6 hrs of death if body is not refrigerated

Till corneal retreviation team arrives---

Place wet cotton with ice over the closed eye lids. It will keep the tissue moist.

Raise Head with a pillow.Switch off the fans If possible, antibiotic eye

drops may be periodically instilled in the eyes in order to reduce chances of infection

PROCEDURE

Consent form - should be completely

and correctly filled

Eye jar and blood test tubes should be

labelled with-

Time & date of death

Time & date of enucleation

Cause of death

Name of enucleator

10-30 cc blood for serological testing

Subclavian artery or vein is the preferred siteFemoral Artery or vein as last resort

On reaching eye bank

Tissues are examined, processed and used for corneal transplant operation as early as possible.

The needy patients are contacted in accordance with the waiting list.

Eyes are a precious gift to a person. But the same eyes bring misery when misused or when they are lost. A wise man utilizes that gift while alive and on death too
