MURPHY’S LAW OF TUM-TUMS

Whenever you need a tum-tumin one direction,

There is always a tum-tum available

in the opposite direction.

USERS OF TUM-TUMS Can be classified in the following

catagories:Students

Hostel 1, 2, 3, 4 and 10 Remaining Hostels

Staff MembersElderly peopleSchool KidsHousewivesNew comers

STUDENTS The team itself:

Tum-tums in the morning are always full and hence of not much use

Inadequate tum-tums at peak times 8:30 am; 9:30 am; 2:00 pm 12:30 pm; 5:00 pm

Route information not widely availableBetter to walk or take an auto rather than

wait for a tum-tum

STUDENTS (CONTD.) Hostel 2 Freshies:

Names: Himaksh and ShashankUse tum-tums twice or thrice a weekRoutes not clearTum-tums always full and never available

when required mainly during class timeHave to run to catch tum-tums and still miss

themOvercrowded and riskyNot worth 1000 Rs per year

STUDENTS (CONTD.) Hostel 6 and 13:

Names: Ankit Rana and Tej VeerRegular users of tum-tums - thrice a day!Frequency is lessKnowledge of routes of busesWastage of time in getting in and out of

large busesSmaller buses might be betterBuses are from 12-13 always insufficient no

matter how many ….

STUDENTS (CONTD.) Hostel 10:

Names: Sneha Jain and Ananya Use tum-tums rarely Rash driving is an issue (Mrityuvahan) Academic area is near so not regular users

Hostel 8: Name: Mahesh Yadav and Raunak Bardia Use buses once a day on an average Overcrowded and insufficient buses Buses from 12-13 don’t stop at H-8, always full

during peak time Demanded refund of tum-tum fee sometime

back

IITB STAFF MEMBERS School Children

Name: MayurUses tum-tum between school and home

daily Irregular timings of tum-tumsSometimes gets late to school due to tum-

tumsRash driving Buses not maintained properly, some seats

are risky and may hurtNot much crowded

IITB STAFF MEMBERS (CONTD.) Elders

Name: Mr. Mohan JhadavFunds of tum-tums not used properlyDrivers are not experiencedDuplicate parts are used in tum-tums,

hence quality degradesBattery-powered tum-tums used earlier

were betterMoney wasted on ticket machines which are

no more in useDrivers talk rudely to elders.

IITB STAFF MEMBERS (CONTD.) Housewives:

Name: Anonymous Uses tum-tums to drop kids to schoolOvercrowded tum-tums at 8:45 which is the

optimum time for leaving for schoolDrivers don’t stop at the exact stop; have to

run sometimes to catch the busAgain rash driving and rude behaviorForced to buy a two-wheeler because of

tum-tum issues

FIRST TIME USERS New comers:

Name: Madhu GargUsed tum-tum once when came to campuLiked the system Better than the BEST buses which run in

MumbaiNo information at the main gateNo tickets available at main gate

ADMINISTRATION Drivers:

Name: Snatosh and Sunil LokhandeDrive tum-tums daily for 8 hours a dayLunch time and breakfast times are not

suitableWorks on daily basis, Rs. 330 per day, no

leaves!Students are rude, no problem with staff

members…

ADMINISTRATION (CONTD.)

Have to cover a route in 20 minutes, therefore rash driving

Route information is inadequate and hence students ask the drivers - “Maingate jaayegi kya?” asked like 100 times a

day; adds to the frustrationBuses not well maintained. Breaks and

gears are always an issue.

CONCLUSION Frequency of tum-tums is insufficient to

match the needs.Overcrowded tum-tums

Buses are not maintained well.

CONCLUSION (CONTD.) Route information is not available

readily Time constrain in routes is cause of rash

driving Tradeoff between capacity of buses and

getting in/out time.Large capacity means more people at a

time but also more time is wasted in getting in and out.
