An industry perspective on current research needs and priorities for the

shrimp industry in Indonesia

Introduction

• General problems of Indonesia shrimp industry :– Disease outbreak in main production area :

TSV, IHHNV, WSSV, IMNV.– Rising of antibiotic issue, rejection and

shipping back from the buyers. Traceability issue

– Market demand tend to decrease, lack of spirit of the shrimp farmers to cultivating the shrimp

There are two main problem on shrimp culture in Indonesia :

- Technical problem

- Non-technical (market issue problem,

supporting material as fuel, feed price, etc.)

Problems in shrimp culture

1. Shortage of good quality PL.

2. Slow growth and diseases problem (TSV, WSSV, IHHNV, IMNV)

3. Very high of feed price ($1/kg) due to increasing fish meal ($ 1.4/kg)

4. Increasing of fuel price ($ 0.66/ltr)

5. Rising antibiotic issue – resulting on lowering farm gate price

6. Degradation of water quality environment resulted by waste of industry, urban and shrimp farm

Current research and action needed for now and the future

1. Vannamei and monodon genetic improvement.

2. Domestication broodstock to get quantity and quality broodstock which can produce good quality PL (faster growth and diseases resistant)

3. Find out fish meal replacement on shrimp feed formulation to lowering shrimp feed price

4. Find out energy alternative for electricity and improving energy efficiency in aeration

5. Provide more sensitive and accurate equipment (LC-MS/MS) to examine antibiotic residue in shrimp before exported.

6. Find out new methods and agent to prevent shrimp disease without antibiotic and prohibited chemical material.

7. Immediately research and application of GAP ( site selection, design and construction, good aquaculture technique and effluent management). To keep good environment or water quality.

8. Manpower training for improving skill on implementation of GAP (Good Aquaculture Practices)

9. Law enforcement on GAP implementation in shrimp farming industry

10.To build independent institution (with international accreditation) to certified shrimp farming industry. Certification process should be free of charges, all the expenses by government
