An Astronaut…• Is Latin for “star sailor”. • They go on space shuttles to conduct

experiments and expand our understanding of life and other galaxies.

• They prepare for and perform space operation activities (ex. working on the space shuttle, working on mission control)

• They train hard for a variety of spaceflights, including shuttles and expedition assignments to the International Space Station.

EducationThe minimum degree that

astronauts need is a bachelor’s degree. But, since they are required to perform a wide range of technical and scientific work, most of them have a masters of PHD in engineering, science, math, psychology, medicine, or anything related to aerospace industry.

Colleges that are Good for this Career

• University of Maryland(UMD) has a neutral buoyancy tank for future astronauts

• The college or university you attend must be an accredited institution.

• Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) - Buzz Aldrin (Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr. ) went to this school

• University of Southern California(USC)- Neil Armstrong went to this school

Annual Salary and more

• This depends on the Federal Government’s General Schedule pay for the grades GS-11 through GS-14. their grades depend on each astronaut’s academic achievements and experience. Currently, a GS-11 starts at $64,724 per year and a GS-14 can earn up to $141,715 per year.

• The hours per week depend on when shuttles will be launched off into space.
