We makechairs.

That’s what we do. Made by hand from 80% recycled Aluminum. It’s better for the environment that way. But it’s not easy.

In fact it takes 77 steps to get there. Welding, grinding, tempering, polishing. And that’s just a few of them.

After all why should the machines have all the fun? There’s no mould injected, mass production here. Sure we use a few machines, but for us they’re just tools, operated by us, by hand.

It takes 50 hands 4 hours to make just one chair. And if you want it polished, that’s another 8 hours.

Made by hand. It’s what makes every chair unique. Look underneath a few. Some welds may be more buzzed than burred. Others more burred than buzzed. It’s not a mistake. It’s human.

Designed to last 150 years. So if it breaks on your 121st birthday, please send it back. We’ll happily replace it. Now that’s what we call sustainability.

Here’s howMaterials & Process

The 1006 Navy® aluminum chair, developed in collaboration with ALCOA in 1944, was designed for US Submarines. The Navy utilized Emeco chairs because they are impervious to corrosion, non-magnetic, lightweight, fireproof and incredibly strong. These are also the basic attributes of aluminum. Emeco uses the best quality material to assure you of the best possible chair.

77 Steps

Skilled Emeco craftsmen employ over 77 individual steps to create the 1006 Navy® chair. Many of these craftsmen have taken over twenty years to perfect their skills. Our facility in Hanover, Pennsylvania is one of the few remaining manufacturing plants in the area. Emeco looks forward by implementing the latest manufacturing techniques and apprenticeship programs.

Forming

Emeco starts with soft ‘0’ temper aluminum to achieve smooth curves and fluid form.

Welding

The Emeco chair requires meters of weld, from the distinctive tapered legs through the custom molded seat to the iconic back. Emeco uses no hardware in creating this monolithic entity.

Grinding & Polishing

Emeco craftsmen grind flush for a one-piece appearance. Emeco specially trains its polishers to produce a hand-polished finish that is as close to perfection as possible. It takes eight man-hours to polish one Emeco chair — individual parts are polished, assemblies are polished again, and the completed chair is polished a third time. Hand-polished chairs are finished with aluminum polish, and then a final wipe-down of cornstarch to create the super high shine. Hand-polished chairs develop a “patina” with age and use, similar to any fine metal.

2

we do it:Heat Treating

A proprietary heat treatment begins with aluminum tensile strength at bendable 18,000 pounds per square inch (p.s.i.) and ends at ridged 45,000 pounds p.s.i. There are three steps to strengthen the chair: a 960 Cº salt bath takes the aluminum from 0 temper to T4, the chair is squared up to eliminate wobble, and then baked overnight in a special oven to take the aluminum from T4 to T6, or 3 times stronger than steel.

Hard Finishing

Every inch of each chair is hand brushed in the direction of the aluminum grain. This procedure alone takes years to master. No other aluminum product is hand finished to the skill level of an Emeco chair.

Anodizing

Through this electrolytic process, the surface of an aluminum chair transforms from aluminum to aluminum oxide — a super durable finish. Aluminum oxide is next to the hardness of a diamond. In fact, most sandpaper today is aluminum oxide.

Powder Coating

Emeco uses high-quality European power coat in this electro-static process. Electric current is passed through the chair, which attracts the sprayed powder, and then the chair is baked at 350 Cº for a uniform coating.

3

Stop recycling.

Environmental Issues:

Emeco uses 80% recycled aluminum content to make our chairs. Of the recycled aluminum, half is post consumer (soft drink cans) and half is post industrial (manufacturing scrap). Chairs made out of virgin aluminum have an energy density that is 17 times higher than that of Emeco chairs. Emeco all-aluminum chairs are 100% recyclable. The Emeco factory in Hanover, PA conforms to all applicable U.S., State and Local environmental regulations.

It is important to note the recycled content, and recyclability of Emeco chairs. But in addition, and perhaps even of greater significance, is the aspect of lifetime costing. Emeco all-aluminum chairs have an estimated lifespan of 150 years or more, making them a sound investment in every way.

LEED™ Certification:

No product can be LEED™ Certified; certification is only granted to the entire building or interior. A project is LEED™ Certified by qualifying for credits that accrue when environmentally sound choices are made in the design and building process. Product choices can help the project qualify for LEED™ Certification by being environmentally sound. Some jurisdictions require new construction to have a minimum number of LEED™ Credits.

Construction Waste Management Emeco uses 100% recyclable shipping and packing materials. We even use paper tape.

Credit #4.2

Recycled Content Emeco aluminum furniture is made of 80% recycled aluminum; 40% post consumer recycled material and 40% post industrial recycled material.

The 111 Navy Chair® is made of 65% post consumer recycled PET plastic.

Credit #5.1

Regionally Manufactured Materials Projects shipped within 500 miles of our Hanover, PA facility — cities on the East Coast from Boston through Washington, DC. In addition, the recycledaluminum used in Emeco products is processed in Baltimore, MD, adding another credit contribution.

Aluminum does not emit VOCs or aldehydes in any measurable concentration, therefore out gassing requirements are not applicable.

LEED™ (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a division of the US Green Building Council, a government sponsored organization whose goal is to promote environmentalism in the buildingindustry. For more information please visit www.usgbc.org.

Emecowith…

Andrée Putman

“What I wanted to do with the Emeco chair was what my friend Coco Chanel did with the ‘little black dress’ — create a simple, smart, sexy chair that never goes out of style.”

3 Ettore Sottsass

“A chair must be really important as an object, because my mother always told me to offer a chair to a lady.”

4 Norman Foster

“The 20-06 is the result of a genuine collaboration between the Foster Studio and the Emeco Team and will contribute to Emeco’s remarkable history.”

Michael Young

“I feel passionate about working with natural materials that live for ever; wood and metal are really the materials that connect to the human.”

5 Frank Gehry

“I wanted three things in this chair: comfort, light weight and strength. Aluminium was the obvious choice and Emeco was the only company that could make it.”

2 Adrian Van Hooydonk

“We agreed that the modernization of the 1951 chair would be 100% Classic Emeco — simple utilitarian and masculine. The design phase that followed was one of the most collaborative and rewarding of my life.”

1 Philippe Starck

“If you use the good materials you keep the chair a long time and if you keep your chair 20 years then you almost don’t need to be recycling.”
