Introduction

• An air conditioner is a device that provide heating and cooling to the air temperature. The aim of distributing the conditioned air to an occupied space such as a building, house or vehicle to improve thermal comfort and indoor environment quality.

• Replacing the air conditioners having poor IEQ (indoor environment quality) with better IEQ is the aim of this project.

Factors affecting comfort air conditioning

• Temperature of air• Humidity of air• Purity of air• Motion of air

Air conditioning technology

Calculation of air conditioning load

Cooling loads are• Heat transfer through a building skin by

conduction• Solar heat gain(radiation) through glass or other

transparent materials• Heat gains from ventilation air• Internal heat gain by occupants Hence, by controlling some of them we can increase the EER

Types of Ac’s and their features

• Window air conditioners• Split air conditioners• Packaged air conditioners• Central air conditioners

Energy conservation of air conditioners

• Air conditioning can use a huge amount of energy

• Air conditioner use in the U.S. results in an average of about 100 million tons of CO2 emissions from power plants every year.

• Both can be controlled by purchasing technically out-dated solutions

Selection of right air conditioners

• Choosing Power (BTU’S)• Room size• Energy efficient• Additional features Some features like heating and cooling,Electric remote control, manual control, auto restart and more.

Energy conservation procedure

• Air conditioners lowers the humidity and also improve the indoor environment quality.

• By carefully studying region where we are using, we can save money and energy.

• Proper size selection• Efficiency of the air conditioners• Installation of the unit• Maintenance and operation• Weather-strips all doors and windows

Thermal Control & Energy Conservation

• For proper thermal performance, it is necessary to insulate ducting, piping, fiting, and equipment component of AC because insulation design gives a control over delivering the temperature, energy conservation and personal protection

• This is one component of energy efficient design which is economically minimize operating costs

Air conditioning systems & Green buildings

• Energy efficient air conditioning units are typically more expensive but higher SEER of 13 or more where as the old one having SEER of 6 or less.

• Hence, a systematic approach with all modern techniques by replacing higher EER rating AC’s will decrease the consumption of energy to a tune of 30 to 40 %

Technical Evaluation

• The most important key indicator in AC’s operation is its thermostat setting

• Thermostat is a temperature-sensitive switch that control a space conditioning unit such as furnace, air conditioner, or both. When the indoor temp. drops below or rises above the thermostat setting , the switch moves to the on position and provide a comfort zone.

Types of Thermostat

1. Automatic and programmable thermostats a. Electromechanical b. Digital c. Hybrid d. Occupancy, and e. Light sensing2. Thermostats with automatic temp. adjustment

Performance parameter

• Higher the COP and EER, the more energy efficient is the equipment

Technical and economical analysis

Following parameters are important for the technical and economical analysis

1. Star Rating - The star rating is calculated from star rating band.2. Star Rating Band – It is a range of EER.3. Family of models – It is the range of models of one particular brand, to which a single set of test reports is applicable and having same relevant physical characteristics ( energy consumption, EER and performance characteristics )

Role of air conditioners in green buildings

To protect our planet as well as the human being from the adverse effect of air conditioners, we must have to go for green concepts which provide high COP & EER along with fair environment

Recovery, Recycling and Reclaiming of Refrigerants

• Laws have been proposed to prevent the release of CFC refrigerants into the atmosphere.

• Our role is we have to purchase such air conditioners that uses new refrigerant as R-134a, r-407C or R-410A which harm the ozone layer very less.

Conclusion

The average efficiency of air conditioners unit sold tends to increase gradually over time, so replacing old units can reduce energy consumption , more comfortable and very less harmful to the environment as well as to our health.
