Aim: What were the major similarities and differences

between the Spanish and Portuguese Empires?

Imperialism- a policy of extending a country's

power and influence through diplomacy or military

force.

Old Imperialism- refers to European imperialist

activity before the advancements of the Industrial

Revolution that enabled the complete subjugation of

the globe. The “Old” era is characterized by trading

posts and coastal dominance, piracy of sea-trade, the

Atlantic Slave Trade, and Columbian Exchange.

“Old World” populations couldn’t be conquered at

this time (Except for New World civilizations).

Distribution of European Colonial Possessions

What does this map suggest about European colonial possessions- what do you see?

The Treaty of

Tordesillas gave

Portugal a

monopoly on the

transport and sale

of slaves.

Britain eventually

took this

monopoly from

Portugal as the

Portuguese Empire

declined.

Cortes and Montezuma II (Aztec in Central America)

Pizarro and Atahualpa (Inca in South America)

Over 100 Different Types of Potatoes Cultivated

by the Inca

Silver deposits found at Potosi were some of the richest in the world. The Spanish

mined incredible amounts to support their mercantilist economy and purchase rare

goods from China.
