Profiles by Kate Rosenblum
On World AIDS Day, December 1, 1993, activistsjoined together in Los Angeles’s Lincoln Heightsneighborhood to confront the plague of silence
surrounding HIV/AIDS in the Latino community. It wasthis gathering that brought to life The Wall Las MemoriasProject, founded by Richard Zaldivar. Richard aspired tobuild a memorial for people lost to AIDS.
Supporters raised money to construct the memorialand, 11 years later, the wall was built. Upon thememorial’s completion, Richard declared, “We have facedthe silence and denial of AIDS. More than 10 years ago,we made a commitment to build a monument toremember people lost to AIDS. Today, we celebrate apromise made and kept. No more denial, no more shame,no more fear. Only love.”
The Wall Las Memorias is not only a monument, butalso a non-profit organization that provides free HIVtesting, as well as services targeting men who have sexwith men (MSM) and communities of faith. “Living in theera of the AIDS pandemic, it was my calling to fight thedisease and address the social factors that led to thespread of HIV,” states Richard. “That remains my missionto this day.”
The Wall Las Memorias:Remembering the Past, Looking to the Future
The Life Group LA is dedicated to improving thelives of people who are infected and affected byHIV. Empowerment and acceptance serve as the
foundation of this organization, which offers free medicalforums and support groups. Their services provide thejudgment-free environment, emotional support, and education necessary to make healthy choicessurrounding HIV.
The Life Group LA Executive Director and Co-Founder,Sunnie Rose, lost many friends to HIV/AIDS. Sheremembers visiting dying friends in the hospital; somekept their HIV status a secret, while others were openabout living with HIV but had families afraid to visit them.Sunnie recalls, “I would visit friends and crawl in bed withthem. I just didn’t want people to be alone and isolated.”
Sunnie’s calling to support others in times of need led herto establish The Life Group LA in 2005.
Sunnie believes her organization’s involvement as aCCI team is vital. “I cannot thank AIDS Walk Los Angelesenough for extending this honor and privilege,” she says.“To be quite honest, without the money we raised last yearat AIDS Walk Los Angeles, I am not sure where we wouldbe now. I am forever, abundantly grateful!”

Stylist to the Stars Takes His Team to the Top
Celebrity stylist Chaz Dean is one of the hardest working men in hair business. On topof developing incredible hair products and styling stars like Alyssa Milano, BrookeBurke, and Holly Robinson Peete, Chaz stays busy fighting for causes close to his
heart. One of his many ambitions is to sustain and improve care for people living withHIV/AIDS. Chaz works toward this goal by leading his AIDS Walk Los Angeles team, “WENin Spirit,” and inviting fellow stylists, friends, and clients to join him to fundraise and walktogether.
Chaz is committed to supporting AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) and empowering hiscommunity to join him in the fight against AIDS. He explains, “APLA has inspired me to startmy own team and walk to help raise funds and awareness. From extensive communityoutreach to vital food pantries, countless lives have been touched and changed by APLA.”Now in its third year, his team (named after Chaz’s acclaimed WEN line of hair products) hasrisen fast to become one of the top teams from last year’s event! Last year they collected$18,686 and ranked 16th highest out of 1,730 teams.
The creativity pulsing through Chaz and his team reaches beyond their hair styling anddesign talents. Their innovative fundraising techniques are products of passion and freshperspectives. Strategies include selling custom hand-painted Chuck Taylors and limited-edition team T-shirts on eBay, donating haircuts by Chaz, and auctioning baskets of product.
True to their team name, this group walks with spirit. Operations Manager at Chaz Dean, Inc.,
Craig Register, remarks that, “From the enthusiasm of the volunteers to the positivity of thewalkers themselves, AIDS Walk Los Angeles inspires us. The joy that everyone brings to the Walkmakes it one of the most inspiring events we take part in all year.”
Team WEN in Spirit comes to West Hollywood Park ready to rejoice as they head 6.2 milescloser to a world free from HIV/AIDS. Leading the way are their equally spirited and well-groomed four-legged friends: Chaz’s dogs Hunter, Spencer, and Ella.

PROFILES IN COURAGE – APLA CLIENT STORIESBy Kristen Hellwig
Kengi CarrKengi Carr remembers the first time he saw someone with AIDS.
“An old family friend was hospitalized, and I drove his motherto see him,” Kengi recalls. “He looked awful – his mother wassobbing – and I remember wondering, ‘Is this going to be mesomeday?’”
In fact, Kengi did become HIV-positive in 2008 – furthercomplicating a medical history that already included sickle cellanemia and five bouts with cancer. At the time of his HIVdiagnosis, Kengi was also homeless.
“I knew that I needed help,” he says, “I had volunteered atAPLA briefly in high school – so I knew that’s where I could go.”He joined APLA’s Newly Diagnosed support group and beganseeing a case manager.
Kengi says that “the staff at APLA genuinely cares. They calland check on me, and I’ve learned about so many resources thatI can turn to.”
No longer homeless himself, Kengi now uses his experienceliving on the streets to help others. He organizes groups of friendswho assemble kits that include fresh socks and toiletries for othermen, women, and youth who live on Los Angeles streets.
“I know that I can depend on APLA,” Kengi says, “so now Ican spend time helping those who depend on me.”
Darryl HendrixFor the first year after Darryl Hendrix was diagnosed with HIV,he didn’t tell his family. Thirty-one and married at the time, thefather of two had enrolled in a research study at County-USCMedical Center to investigate an experimental drug to treat hishigh blood pressure. Three weeks into the study, a nurse pulledhim into an exam room.
“You don’t qualify to continue,” she said. “You have HIV.”Darryl’s HIV wasn’t the only secret he kept from his family. Hewas also gay.
“It was just something else to be ashamed of,” he explains. The stress worsened his blood pressure problem until heeventually gathered his family in one room and came clean abouthis infection. The following afternoon, his mother died. “Thatwas just the last straw,” he remembers quietly. “I thought[my mother’s] death was my fault. It was just too much.”
Within weeks, Darryl had attempted suicide twice, and hebegan spending most of his monthly income on cocaine. Hisblood pressure escalated wildly until, one day as he walked outof a grocery store, he collapsed in the parking lot and suffered astroke.
While hospitalized, a nurse told him about APLA. He beganseeing a therapist through APLA’s Pacific Center, a program thatrecruits volunteer licensed marriage and family therapists whoprovide free weekly psychotherapy in the therapist’s privatepractice for APLA clients. “I had never really learned to copewith my HIV and my addiction,” he says. “But during therapy, Ilearned how.”
Since he had become sober, Darryl also qualified forsubsidized housing, and an APLA housing case manager locateda Hollywood apartment for him. He used the free bus pass hereceived from APLA to travel to the agency’s Vance NorthNecessities of Life Program (NOLP) food pantry for groceries. And, determined to overcome the shame that still shrouded hislife as a gay man, Darryl attended a series of workshops hostedby APLA’s African American Gay Men’s Health Initiative(AAGMHI).
It was during those two days, Darryl says, that he took hisfirst steps toward conquering the stigma that surrounded hissexuality. “I realized that being gay isn’t shameful,” he explains.“I have a lot of reasons to take better care of myself, to staysober, and to control my HIV.”
Felicia SwiftLooking back on her past, Felicia Swift can hardly remember atime when she wasn’t homeless. Felicia, a White MountainApache Indian who left her reservation in Arizona for LosAngeles, struggled with drug addiction and alcoholism. She isalso HIV-positive.
“Four years ago, a friend told me about APLA. He said thatthey could help me,” Felicia explains. “Since then, my life hasturned around.” APLA’s Housing Support Services staff helpedFelicia to find and pay for affordable housing. “Suddenly, I hadmy own apartment. I had rent and responsibilities. I even had myown cats. There were so many reasons to stay sober,” she says.
And Felicia, who identifies as a transgender woman, alsofound a peer group. She began to attend meetings of APLA’s RedCircle Project, the only HIV prevention program in Los AngelesCounty that specifically targets Native American / Alaska Natives.
“It wasn’t easy to find others who[m] I could identify with,”she says. “But during Red Circle meetings, I can really talk aboutissues that affect me: alcoholism, drugs, urban life. And I have achance to talk to people who aren’t infected – to help them learnhow to stay safe.”
“And for once,” Felicia adds with a smile, “I feel like I’m partof a group. That’s a new feeling for me. I’m just not looking infrom the outside anymore.”
I know that I can depend onAPLA, so now I can spendtime helping those who
depend on me.

CRE: Providing the Hardware that Powers Our Commitment
to the Environment
It’s Sunday morning, 6 a.m.—the day of AIDS Walk Los Angeles. AtSign-In, tech-savvy volunteers unload and set up enough computers, power cables, and routers to run a small company. For the next
several hours, the parking structure at the West Hollywood Library servesas a makeshift Wi-Fi hotspot for thousands as AIDS Walk Los Angelesgoes live. The goal? To ensure the event stays as green as possible byoffering efficient, paperless sign-in. Culver City-based CRE Rentals makesthis operation possible by supplying the computers necessary to powerthis effort at no charge to the event.
In 2008, AIDS Walk Los Angeles introduced its Green Walker™program, an eco-friendly initiative to reduce both paper and postage.Green Walkers collect donations online and receive information via email.A huge perk of the program is the express, electronic “Green Walker Sign-In” on the morning of the event. With these walkers now comprising morethan a third of the walker population, this Sign-In needs to be stockedwith computers capable of handling a crowd. Thanks to CRE, AIDS WalkLos Angeles is able to offer this quick-and-easy option to more than12,000 Green Walkers.
In addition to donating dozens of laptops to expedite Green WalkerSign-In in West Hollywood Park, CRE also donates laptops to AIDS WalkNew York and AIDS Walk San Francisco, helping AIDS Walk events stayearth-friendly from coast to coast.
“They do so much in all three cities! We are unbelievably grateful fortheir dedication to ensure our fight to eliminate HIV/AIDS goes hand inhand with our commitment to the environment,” says AIDS Walk LosAngeles Event Operations Specialist, Natalie Lembeck.
As the Green Walker program enters its fifth year, support from CREhelps the AIDS Walk movement continuously make strides in producinga greener event.

Star Walkers Club
Star Walkers are AIDS Walk Los Angeles’s fundraising elite—those who set their fundraising goal at $1,000 or more. Thecollective power of these dedicated supporters has generated
millions of dollars for AIDS Project Los Angeles and many other AIDSservice organizations in L.A. County. This year we shine a specialspotlight on one of our most inspirational stars: Cynthia Park.
Cynthia began fundraising for AIDS Walk Los Angeles in 1993, andshe hasn’t stopped since. She surprised even herself by raising morethan $35,000 that first year. This was but the first of many successes. To date, she has raised a total of over $1 million!
Currently Supervisor of DreamWorks Animation's CharitableGiving, Grants and Community Outreach, Cynthia was longtime
Executive Assistant to Jeffrey Katzenberg,CEO of DreamWorks Animation. With Jeffrey’s Rolodex by her side, she is able to include studio executives, actors, producers, directors, screenwriters and musicians among her sponsors. However, it is not merely this special donor base keeping Cynthia at #1 on the “Top Fundraisers” list. It is her unwavering commitment to see a day without AIDS that sustains her astonishing fundraising year after year. This is evident to all her sponsors, many of whom havebeen supporting her since 1993. Cynthia says they are grateful forthe personal messages she sends, once in the form of faxes, and nowvia email.
“Let's all help to eliminate this epidemic,” Park says. “There arestill people contracting this terrible disease. There are still peopledying.” Cynthia adds, “There are so many organizations and causesthat need our time, attention, and support, so I am very grateful forevery dollar I am able to raise for AIDS Walk Los Angeles each year."
“She has a lot of elegance,” admires Craig Miller, Founder andProducer of AIDS Walk Los Angeles. “When she approaches potentialdonors, she lets her personality shine through and everyone wants tosupport her—because it’s a good cause and she is graceful andpassionate about it.”
Thank you, Cynthia. Each year, you bring us closer to ending thisepidemic.

New Roads School Leads the Path to an AIDS-Free GenerationBy Inbar Sharon
New Roads School in Santa Monica is a small private school with a big heart. Founded onthe philosophy of giving, the school reserves 40 percent of its funding for scholarships. The result is a significantly diverse and unique student body dedicated to fostering a
warm, accepting school community. This ubiquitous spirit of community service led New Roads School to form an AIDS Walk Los
Angeles team in 2001. They have reached milestones throughout the past 11 years, and last yearthey walked with more than 300 Team Members! New Roads School is also a member of theKids Who Care Coalition, a group of about 10 schools that walk together as one massive team atthe event. Formed in 1992, this coalition is proud to be a Gold Team, ranking among AIDS WalkLos Angeles’s top 20 fundraising groups!
In addition to their unwavering dedication to the community, the team’s passion is fueled bya strong, personal connection to the fight against AIDS. On September 2, 2006, they lost one oftheir beloved students, Andraya Hunter, to AIDS. Andraya and her two siblings were born withHIV after their father infected their mother with the virus. She lost her whole family to the disease, and was raised primarily by her grandmother. Andraya passed away at age 18, just 3 weeks afterreceiving her high school diploma.
Team Leader and Director of Volunteer Services at New Roads, Mario Johonson, describesAndraya as a “dynamic, outspoken youth leader who continually educated other young peopleabout the importance of sexual health, safer sex, and compassion for the afflicted.” She inspiredthose who knew her while she was alive, and her spirit continues to inspire incoming students.Andraya envisioned the creation of a safe space at her school, where kids can talk freely aboutsexual health. “We have sought to honor her spirit by rallying our entire community to come outand support this awesome event,” says Mr. Johonson. “She lit the flame and we want it to stayalive forever.” With students walking from the elementary, middle, and high school, as well asnumerous faculty, friends, and extended family members, it is clear that New Roads School isextraordinarily committed to that mission.
With more than 300 Team Members, New Roads School is ready to taketheir determination to the streets at AIDS Walk Los Angeles.

Welcome to AIDS Walk Los Angeles 2012
Thirty-thousand people. That’s the number expected to fill the streets of West Hollywoodand Los Angeles on October 14 for the 28th annual AIDS Walk Los Angeles.
It’s a number large enough to stop traffic; to turn heads from Highland Park to Hollywood;and to remind our city that HIV/AIDS is still taking lives every day, in every neighborhood. It’san extraordinary number. But it falls short of another different and devastating statistic: 33,000 –the number of lives taken by HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles County since the epidemic began.
Since 1985, when Los Angeles held the first fundraising walk to fight HIV/AIDS, Angelenoshave been on the front lines of the battle to end the epidemic. Together, we’ve made tremendousstrides.
In 2011, with your support, we provided direct services and education programs to morethan 11,000 low-income people living with HIV/AIDS. We distributed over 150,000 bags of freegroceries through our Vance North Necessities of Life Program food pantry network – thelargest of its kind in the country. We performed more than 12,000 dental procedures in our twodental clinics and mobile dental van. And we’ve provided countless hours of mental healthcounseling, housing assistance, and in-home care throughout Los Angeles.
Because of your efforts, we’ve also reached thousands with our face-to-face HIV preventionand testing programs. These groundbreaking initiatives target those at highest risk of infection– including gay men, people of color, and youth – to stop the epidemic in its tracks. Our testingprogram identifies those who are HIV-positive but don’t know it and links them directly to life-saving care.
And your work has taken us from City Hall to Sacramento to the U.S. Capitol to bring theurgent concerns of all affected by HIV/AIDS directly to our most influential policymakers.
But we still face stark realities. In Los Angeles County, seven new people become HIV-positiveevery day. And 60,000 are already living with the disease here; 20 percent don’t know it.
That’s why we need you: to bring vital programs and services to every person who walksthrough our doors; to offer HIV prevention education to all we can reach; to talk about the worstpublic health crisis in our history with every leader who will listen; and to lend our decades ofexperience to every person we can touch.
On behalf of the clients, volunteers, staff and board of directors of AIDS Project LosAngeles, welcome to AIDS Walk Los Angeles 2012. Thank you for walking with us.

We Miss You, Elaine
This Valentine’s Day,AIDS Walk LosAngeles suffered a
heartbreaking loss whenlongtime volunteer ElaineAbraham passed away. For 15 years, the AIDSWalk Los Angeles officewas a second home toElaine. To the event staff, she was family.
Seventeen years ago, Elaine’s son Jeff died ofAIDS. Rather than squelching her spirit, this terribleloss fueled her determination to prevent othermothers from experiencing this kind of suffering.Elaine made it her mission to keep Jeff's memoryalive by volunteering for AIDS Walk Los Angeles.
Throughout the busy season of preparationbefore each year’s event (July through October), youwould find Elaine in the office nearly every day, sittingalongside fellow dedicated volunteers as they talked, laughed, stuffed Walker Kits, packaged posters, andhelped with a variety of tasks. Our staff lovedstopping by the volunteer room to chat with Elaine, always uplifted by her beautiful smile and energy.
Making us happy made Elaine happy. She cookeddelicious lunches for us, toting pans of shepherd’spie, tamale pie, and kugel into the office. Even after
she went on a strict “doctor’s orders” diet andrefrained from eating these dishes, she continuedcooking them for us.
Elaine’s last visit to the office was in January. Thevolunteer room was freshly painted blue; Elaine lovedit and said the color matched her eyes. A few weekslater, longtime staff and close friends of Elaine, BertChampagne and April Yamamoto, visited Elaine in thehospital. She told them she loved the AIDS Walk LosAngeles staff and thanked everyone for making herlast 15 years so wonderful. The following afternoon, she passed away peacefully.
This spring, April, Bert, and several volunteersarranged a memorial for Elaine. At the service,Elaine’s daughter Jackie said she knew her mom washappy when she was volunteering for AIDS Walk LosAngeles.
The office is not the same without Elaine. We willwork in her honor on this year’s event and will neverforget her years of dedicated service and positiveoutlook, which live on in all who knew her. Withgreat sadness, Bert expresses that, “When you thinkof love, you think of Elaine. Sometimes on Valentine'sDay, you have to let go of someone you love.”

Nothing inspires me more than seeing 30,000 peopletake to the streets each year in support of this
important cause, I would not miss it for anything. The public can forget how many people in their
community continue to struggle with the day-to-dayconsequences of this disease. AIDS Walk
Los Angeles brings that all back into focus.

Debbie Cordero Answers the Call… and We Adore Her!
By Bert Champagne and Leif Green
“Thank you for callingAIDS Walk Los Angeles. How may I help you?”
Those are the words you willhear when you call the AIDSWalk Los Angeles office and, most likely, the person talking toyou is our sweet and spicyDebbie Cordero! In her role asOffice Coordinator, Debbie is thefront line on incoming calls andanswers an estimated 5,000 callsthroughout any given AIDS WalkLos Angeles campaign.
While her main assignment isto assist the people who call, sheis also responsible forprocessing walker registrations, managing the office inventory ofsupplies, mailing each and every Walker Kit (which numbered more than18,000 last year), and a myriad of tasks large and small; always with asmile.
Debbie’s tasks are numerous and she handles them all with great skilland vivacity, but her greatest gifts to the AIDS Walk are her patience, thoughtfulness, efficiency, and welcoming manner. Her desk is at theentrance to the office, and she greets every visitor with warmth and thesincere desire to help.
Debbie started with AIDS Walk Los Angeles in 2001. She played animportant role in helping the AIDS Walk relocate to West Hollywood Parkwhen it was required to move from Paramount Studios. Due to securityconcerns after the tragic circumstances of September 11th, ParamountStudios was, with great remorse, forced to end its 16-year history ofhosting the event. She has been with us each year after that.
“Debbie is so delightful. She returns to us when the campaign startsevery year; just like a refreshing, lovely spring season after a dull, coldwinter!” Supervisor of Office Management, Bert Champagne, gushes.
Praise for Debbie comes from all of her co-workers. Shona Borevitz,Event Director, explains, “Debbie is the perfect blend of professionalpurpose and homespun kindness.”
Debbie’s hospitality also enchants the staff and volunteers. When thecampaign is in full tilt and some are too busy to escape for lunch, shebrings in a three-foot burrito from Manuel Original El Tepeyac Cafe with allthe delicious trimmings, and makes sure that everyone gets a slice, coveredin her favorite – ranchero sauce!
Sadly for AIDS Walk Los Angeles, Debbie will be retiring after this year’sevent. Shona expresses everyone’s heart-felt well-wishes over Debbie’sdeparture: “Debbie’s bright smile and robust laugh are going to be sorelymissed! “ She adds, “Ya la extrañamos. La amamos mucho, para, nosotrosella es familia.”

Why Are AIDS Walk Los Angeles AdsBanned from Big Blue Bus?
By Ben Fordham
For many years, AIDS ProjectLos Angeles (APLA) haspurchased paid advertise-
ments on Big Blue Bus (operated bythe City of Santa Monica) for itsannual AIDS Walk Los Angeles. These ads help educate and engagethe public.
This year, Big Blue Bus isrefusing these promotions and allother public service messages fromcharities. AIDS Project Los Angeleshas been fighting back with acampaign to end this “absurd” banon advertising non-profit communityservices.
“This unfair policy not only hurtsAIDS Project Los Angeles, it alsotargets all other non-profits whichfoster community spirit, help thosewho are most vulnerable, andprovide valuable information to thepublic,” said Phil Curtis, Director of Government Affairs at APLA.
While the City of Santa Monica blunders over its ad policy, fortunately, the Cityof Los Angeles is not experiencing this difficulty. Such ads are on L.A. buses rightnow, just as similar AIDS Walk ads ran on San Francisco buses earlier this summer.
“Sadly, the unelected executives at Santa Monica City Hall have it wrong,” saidLisa Brisse, President of Santa Monica-based company State of the Heart Fitness, and 18-year resident of Santa Monica. “If ads from oil companies or for extra largesoft drinks can run on Santa Monica buses, then community groups confrontingglobal warming, childhood obesity or AIDS should have the same right to buy ads.”
Brisse is spearheading a new AIDS Walk Los Angeles team called SantaMonicans for AIDS Walk L.A. The team sprung up as a grassroots response fromSanta Monicans to the new Big Blue Bus policy.
“Santa Monica residents are not taking this issue lightly,” said Brisse. “Asresponsible citizens, we will fight to bring responsible values and healthy, activechoices back to the sides of the Big Blue Bus.”
If you are interested in becoming a part of this effort, visit aidswalk.net and jointeam #2776, “Santa Monicans for AIDS Walk L.A.”
Phil Curtis, APLA’s Director of GovernmentAffairs, shows the L.A. Times ad placed byAIDS Walk Los Angeles encouragingsupporters to express their outrange toSanta Monica City officials.
