The first Metro System, the London Underground, was opened in 1863

First rapid transit system in India was Kolkata Metro, which started operation in 1984

History
A Metro Rail System to facilitate movement between Gandhinagar –Ahmedabad was initiated by Gujarat Infrastructure Development Board (GIDB)
The preparation of detailed project report (DPR) for Metro was initiated by GIDB in 2003 through Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC)
The DPR is submitted by DMRC in June 2005 and received Central Government approval the same year
Conceptualized in 2003, the project was put on fast track by State Government in 2009
For execution of project, Gujarat Gov. formed a Special Purpose Vehicle –Metro Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA)

Metro Project is a proposed mass-transmit rail system for the cities of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, India
The DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd) has already done its techno-feasibility study and submitted its report.
Gujarat Government has recently re-approached Delhi Metro Rail Corporation for a modified detailed project report (DRP) for a Metro Rail Project in Ahmedabad.
On 4th Feb 2010, the State Government has set up a ₹ 200 crore Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) namely, METRO LINK EXPRESS FOR GANDHINAGAR AND AHMEDABAD COMPANY Ltd to implement Metro Rail Project under Company Act, 1956
