Results of scientific research carried out by R & D units of the Ministry of Agriculture

Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute (IHAR) in Radzików The first institute in the world to carry out genetic transformation of winter triticale (wheat-rye) MAH 1590 (Bogo) with a bacterial gene bar – imparting resistance to herbicide Basta (D).

Research Institute of Pomology and Floriculture (ISK) in Skierniewice /1/

• Developed several dozen of new fruit varieties and rootstocks for fruit trees

The share of the fruit varieties developed at ISK in new plantings in Poland ranges from 7% for apple to over 40% for raspberry.

Rootstocks of the ‘P’ series have become standard in fruit-growing worldwide.

• Developed and implemented Integrated Fruit Production Technology

At present, this technique is used in Poland to produce fruit on an area of over 12000 ha, which contributes to improvement in fruit quality and reduces negative effects of fruit-growing on the environment.

Research Institute of Pomology and Floriculture (ISK)

in Skierniewice /2/

• Developed and implemented in fruit production a series of harvesters for harvesting soft fruit, including the world’s first sour-cherry harvester that operates without stopping, and also developed cultivation technologies adapted to mechanical harvesting.

• As a result, Poland has become a leading producer of soft fruit in Europe.

Institute of Plant Protection in Poznań

• Developed a scientific basis for integrated protection of agricultural crops against disease-causing agents, pests and weeds while taking into consideration the requirements of ecological agriculture.

The new technologies are for the protection of: • winter and spring wheat• winter and spring barley• rye and wheat-rye• oilseed rape• sugar beet• lupin and other crop plants

Protection of crop plants against agrophages makes it possible to:

• save part of the crop by 16-18 %• stabilize the level of yield• increase the quality of the crop• maintain species biodiversity in the environment

The Veterinary Institute – State Research Institute in Puławy

• Developed and implemented the programme ‘Safety of food of animal origin – consumer safety’.

• Developed a national veterinary programme for controlling chemical residues in food of animal origin.

• Prepared the principles and implemented the system for diagnosing BSE (mad cow disease) on a national scale.

• Developed diagnostic tests for detecting food infected with viruses that cause acute food poisoning in humans.

• The developed programmes are adapted to EU food safety standards and guarantee Poland access to world food markets.

Research Institute of Animal Production in Kraków

• The first Polish cloned animal, called NT-20, has been born. It’s a female rabbit, whose birth was a result of using an original cloning method.

‘Agriculture and energy and the specific research needs resulting from their interrelationship’:

1. Biogas, biomass and biofuel production.2. Production of energetic plants.3. Energy efficiency and saving in agriculture.4. Improving soil fertility to reduce fertilizer inputs,

on-farm recycling of nutrients. 5. Development of site-specific soil management

practices to optimise soil biological, chemical and physical properties and rhizosphere processes.

6. Effect of different cultivation systems on soil biology and fertility, and on energy saving in agriculture.

Work Programme KBBE

‘Climate change and agriculture under the perspectives of adaptation and mitigation’

• Water stress tolerance and water use efficiency in fruit crops.

• Development of technology of the use of atmospheric CO2 for improvement of growth and yielding of fruit crop species.

• Reduction of drought stress by breeding of cultivars resistant to water deficiency.

• Mitigation of drought stress by development of ecological methods of fertilization of fruit crop species with the use of biostimulators and beneficial microorganisms.

• Management of agricultural waste and by-products.• Better use and re-use of water in agriculture more

efficient, e.g. through the development of more efficient water management and irrigation methods to reduce water waste and pollution due to mismanagement at farm level.

• Carbon sequestration in agricultural soils and land.• Farm management, tillage, fertilization approaches and

techniques.
